509S Through-the-Wall Ventilation Fan, White Cover, On/Off Switch, 200 CFM, 8.5 Sones, 8"

Fan installed easily and the damper works great. We used to have a plain small window with screen in our utility room. I was able to remove the window and install this vent. It works great and with the damper I don't have to worry about hot/cold air coming in through fan in the summer/winter months. It moves a lot of air. It is fairly noisy but for our utility room w/toilet it is a perfect unit. Product is quality made and it appears that if something fails it should be easily fixed/replaced.

This old house fell into disrepair as mom fell ill and my stepfather passed away. For about 15 years the bathroom fan didn't work. I chose this because it was through the wall. I didn't like the way the old fan vented into the attic. This fan comes with an electrical junction box attached. My application didn't allow me to use it. I was able to modify the case to "clock" the fan motor housing so the connections were facing up so I could use a conventional junction box. This worked great. I purchased the optional "grease screen" filter as would be used in a kitchen. Dirt build up (this house is dusty) is what killed the old fan. This filter catches some of that and will extend the life of the fan. Only issue is that the first few times I used the fan the backflow flap didn't open. I forgot to remove the piece of tape that holds it closed from the factory so be aware of that.

This is not what the fan was made for. I believe this fan was made for through wall installation and I'm certain it would be fine. Broan is the deal and they are built well. Mine does not go to the outside. It is in my bathroom. Some people might be tempted to use a fan to remove 'mist' from a shower room. I wouldn't--unless it goes to the outside and your condensation is handled properly there. It came with a steel outlet hood to mount outside. Water might still collect on the lip of the hood and drop down to whatever. Maybe not. My bathroom has a high ceiling and not far from my bedroom, open between the rooms by a foyer. I put this exhaust fan at a high position above the entrance, and it exhausts into my attic. Never, never ever, use such a fan to pull out that steamy shower mist into a closed space like an attic. Damp wood, and damp insulation--hell no! Never. This fan is for one thing. It is for when someone (LIKE MY WIFE, not me) uses the toilet. I don't care how the attic smells. This fan moves a lot of air, much more than a typical bathroom exhaust. Is it loud? Not terribly but think of it as a car engine noise you like. It's powerful. It's loud enough to neutralize most "bathroom sounds" and scare the hell out of anything that is sneaking around or playing (squirrels) in your attic. I put mine on the end of a timer switch with increments from polite visit climbing 5 steps to squirrel tornado alert.

I am literally on my 3rd Broan 509 exhaust fan. They've lasted between 10-12 years and whenever I have one start to fail I replace with one that I bought after the previous one failed 10-12 years prior. I remodeled a bathroom last August and had the contractor replace the current 509 with one that I bought 12 years ago (I order another one right away so that if Broan stops making it I'll have a replacement ready to go and I'm good for another 10-12 years). For some reason this one was much louder than the previous two so I ordered the Broan SC100W variable speed switch and had the contractor install it. I usually turn the switch to about the 3 o'clock position and the fan is much quieter, but still pumps out enough moisture that the bathroom mirror stays fog free. I currently have a 509 in the box in my basement store room so I'll be good until about the year 2035 and I won't need to hope the model hasn't been discontinued. p.s., I also have purchased an additional SC100W variable speed switch in case that is discontinued. As a former boy scout, I am always prepared.

I have the “Broan-NuTone 509S Through-the-Wall Ventilation Fan” installed as a bathroom exhaust fan, and I don’t know if that was the proper use case. Does it work? YES! In less than five minutes, ANYTHING - smell, humidity, even the dog - will be sucked out of the room. It’s comically effective. I can feel the wind escaping in the direction of the fan on my body. It is LOUD. As LOUD as an upright vacuum or shop vac. With the addition of the noise of the shower and the reflections of the sounds on multiple tiled surfaces, any music on a Bluetooth speaker will be drowned out. With all that being said, the fan isn’t on for longer than five minutes. We have the fan on a hard-wired Humidity Sensor Switch, and the fan turns off very quickly after the completion of a shower and the bathroom door is opened. I don’t know if I would buy this again. It works spectacularly with the telltale fog on the bathroom mirror being eradicated in minutes. Unfortunately, it is way too loud to be pleasant. I also removed one star because it didn't include a bug filter.

I took a big risk cutting a hole in the side of my house and hoping this would move enough air. Installation was not easy but I was up for the task. Instructions could be better. I installed this fan as high as I could in the back right corner of my garage and then removed a glass garage door window from the front left. It pulls the cool air through the opening in the door while it sucks out the hot air from the ceiling in the back. Works great, garage stays cool.

I have had this in my garage for over a year now and it has performed flawlessly. Pretty easy install if you are familiar with tools, construction techniques and basic physics. I was impressed with the exterior portion. seems to be a heavy gauge metal and very sturdy A bit loud, but since it is clearly listed as 6.5 sones. Don't expect whisper quiet.

The fan works but the knob to switch it on and off is cheap garbage. The original knob broke on first use and they sent a replacement. That broke on about 4th use and they are sending me another knob. We use the fan occasionally and in a residential setting so It breaks about every 10th use. I'm going to take a knob to Lowe's and see if they have something that will fit and not keep breaking. UPDATE: The 2nd replacement knob they sent broke as well. This is a good fan wrapped in cheap, garbage plastic. For what they charge for the fan, the knob should be able to be put through normal use without breaking.

Very big, make sure you read the sizes and that they truly are what you need. Performance is on point though, it sucks air like a nymphomaniac that's been deprived for a week.

Kitchen fan fit great

Although it is a bit loud it does exhaust a lot of air quickly. Works fine but was harder to install then expected. If you are running new electrical as well as installing in new location you can bank on taking at least 2-3 hours.

Returned item, was not what I had in mind, a little too big for my needs.

I had no idea this thing was this big. Eight inches is just the hole that goes through the wall. The chassis and fan themselves are gigantic. I just wanted a kitchen fan. I can't use this. What am I gonna do with this frigging thing?
