The Continuum Encyclopedia of Symbols

After seeing an episode of X Files... i had to have this book. It was better/more interesting than expected. A win for the coffee table and my inner geek.

It's laid out better than other symbols books - with a clear a to z structure so its easy to look for whatever it you are looking for. It appears more detailed than it actually is.. Quite basic meanings with stuff you can find pretty easily. I guess its ok for reference.
