Q: If this is "bio active" and "nutrient enriched" do you still rinse it before putting it in the tank? Or does rinsing it remove the extra benefits?

Liquid inside contains nutrients for your biological filter. If your adding it to an established tank you can drain the liquid. The back of the bag explains this.

Q: Is it 20lb gross weight water+gravel or is it 20lb of gravel?

There should be some water in the bag. This is for the beneficial bacteria. I think 20 lbs is total weight, but the bag is mostly the gravel, you won't feel cheated.

Q: This has snails in it? I read someone said it had snails

I did not have snails in mine. It wasn't until about a year after having it. I bought real plants and thats where I got snails from, plants, not the gravel.

Q: how much would you need for a 40 gallon breeder tank?

I used 2 bags of this product and 1 bag of sand. My tank is heavily planted. Depending on how many plants you want to have, I would go with either 2 or 3 bags. You can always add more later - I added a bag as my plants grew and I found the substrate wasn't deep enough. My tank is a 50 gallon with about the same footprint as a 40 breeder.
