Problem solved
Our neighbours and ourselves agreed to fit a trellis on top of an exisiting 6 ft wood panel fence with concrete posts. The extension arms slotted into the exisiting channels - some were tight but a tap with a hammer eased it in. I bought some timber so each pair were screwed to the timber back to back (45mm thick) so there was no gap above the concrete post. The arms are wider than the trellis thickness, so a 19mm lath was screwed in from one side to stop the trellis rattling in the wind. Looks good and all happy.

Brilliant sturdy product
I used the extenders to attach 60cn trellis panels to the top of a 180cm fence. Just screwed the metal extenders to the ends of the panels and then tapped them down into place. Very sturdy when in place
