Bringing Up Baby [DVD] [1938]

This film is a family favourite. Our old DVD copy was grainy and needed renewing and we were delighted to find it through Amazon at a very reasonable price.This is, in my opinion, one of the very great comedies from this period. The chemistry between Grant and Hepburn is magical and the laughs are many. I must have watched this film either on TV, on VHS or DVD at least 80 times and it never fades. Hepburn's elephantine attempts to ensnare Grant are wonderful as are the moments of riotous farce involving "Baby" the Leopard. A must see for those who have been unlucky enough to have missed the film!

Katherine Hepburn shows that 'comic' side to her talents as an actress in this most unusual comedy with a satirical slant on the word 'Baby'.Probably one of the very few movies one can watch with Cary Grant, who usually is extremely irritating with his jittery and nervous voice and antics in all the other films he made!!!

I can imagine that 'Bringing Up Baby' would not be for everyone. Its very fast paced, Katherine Hepburn hardly stops talking after her entrance at the golf club, there's a fair bit of slapstick and I don't believe there is a serious moment in the whole picture. To be honest, 'screwball' comedy isn't usually for me BUT I found that I loved this movie and that is almost entirely down to Hepburn who is simply a delight from start to finish. I'm amazed that this was supposedly her first attempt at comedy (and, in fact, I was sure that her 'Stage Door' which is also largely a comedy, came before this) because to me she seems to be a complete natural. Her portrayal of flaky Susan Vance is adorable is well as very funny, the lines delivered so naturally they seem like ad-libs. Hepburn's voice is very distinctive and I would say that if you don't like it then you won't like the movie. A friend of mine was appalled at the prospect of two hours listening to 'that drawl non-stop'.Initially I was less impressed with Cary Grant as the repressed zoologist. The performance seemed too forced and deliberate but he got better and came as close as possible to playing the 'straight man' opposite Hepburn. The rest of the cast prove to as ridiculous as the two leads, including Virginia Walker as Grant's chilly love interest. Charles Ruggles is the twitchy big game hunter and May Robson as the wealthy aunt of Hepburn and would-be patron of Grant. It is she who owns one of the two main animal stars of the film, the terrier George who at one point gets into a rather scary looking fight with the tame leopard Baby.I enjoyed this film a lot although I must admit that it is possibly half an hour too long and the final scenes set in the jail are almost too ridiculous (the only character I didn't like was the police chief) but even this scene is saved by Hepburn's turn as a gangster's moll! Overall - highly recommended.

Everyone seems to love this film and, finally, I understand why. I must be just about the last person to watch it, but I'm glad I finally bought a copy on DVD. It's exceptional! Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn never disappoint, and they work so well together. Their characters, David and Susan, are a delightful team. The pace is fast and furious, the laughs come thick and fast, and the action never lets up. This film is a prime example of a screwball comedy, and one of the funniest and most appealing films I've ever seen. I loved it!

This is without doubt one of the best comedies ever made.The scene where Grant and Hepburn are singing 'I can't give you anything but love, Baby' to a leopard, is priceless and unforgettable.The 'intercostal clavicle' is an ingenious fictitious bone created by the scriptwriters as the thread that runs through the film.You won't find much better than this!

Just watched this again - and enjoyed it just as much as ever. If I had to come up with a film to demonstrate Hollywood at its finest in the 1930's then "Bringing up Baby" would make the short list and may well win. Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn are at their impeccable best - a masterclass in the art of sophisticated comic timing. Add a superbly witty fast moving script and slick direction and you've got a classic - as good in 2010 as it was when released over seventy years ago.

I laugh all the way through this film. It gets sillier and sillier and will have you creased up. I absolutely love black n white films and this is one of the funniest films I have ever seen.The acting is amazing, as you would expect, my only slight problem is that it does go on a very long time so is hard to keep my husband's attention.*cough*

Als Kind fand ich den Film ja superlustig. Heute als gereifter Kerl geht mir Katharine Hepburn so dermaßen auf die Ketten, dass ich/ man(n) ihr am liebsten eine reinhauen möchte (einfach schrecklich, die Frau). Ein Klassiker - oder sogar DER Klassiker, wenn es um Screwball-Comedy geht. Selbst heute noch wirkt die Komödie mit den beiden Superstars aus der legendären Hollywood-Zeit temporeich und lebendig. Man bewundert die Fähigkeiten der Akteure, neben der schauspielerischen Leistung auch die Sportlichkeit, denn hier konnte vieles nicht gedoubelt werden. Ebensowenig war man damals im Stande, einen Leoparden per Computer ins Bild zu zaubern, das Tier ist also echt und die Darsteller mussten mit ihm umgehen können. Erstaunlich. Die Handlung ist schnell erzählt: Ein weltfremder Wissenschaftler, der eine strenge junge Dame zu ehelichen sich anschickt, gerät ins Visier einer sehr cleveren und chaotischen Lady, die ihn sich unbedingt angeln will. Der titelgebende Leopard sorgt dabei für allerlei Durcheinander, ebenso diverse andere Kräfte, so dass der arme Mann nicht zur Ruhe und wir nicht aus dem Lachen kommen. Brillant! Und dann der Blick durch das Zeitfenster: Die Autos! Die Frisuren! DIe Mode! Man beachte auch das erstaunlich fortschrittliche Frauenbild, das Hepburn hier bietet - soviel moderner als in vielen Filmen aus den 50ern rund 20 Jahre später. Einer meiner All-time-faves.

La película es maravillosa, el comentario de Quim Casas insufrible. No cuenta nada sobre la producción, ni sobre los actores (por ejemplo, que contrataron a Walter Catlett (el comisario) como coach de comedia para Katharine Hepburn o cómo la ayudó Cary Grant a crear el personaje) ni cómo se rodaron las escenas con el leopardo (en diferentes planos). Además, su tono es aburrido, plano, hace unas pausas larguísimas y, sobre todo y más imperdonable, nos cuenta lo que estamos viendo en la pantalla. Insufrible, ya digo.

Geniale superclassico dell'età dell'oro del cinema con Cary Grant al massimo delle sue eccezionali doti comiche!5 stelle anche per Howard Hawks, Katherine Hepburn e tutti i comprimari da ascoltare in lingua originale.Il ridoppiaggio, purtroppo, benché affidato a grandi professionisti, uccide il film. I doppiatori degli anni '70, per quanto grandi, non hanno assolutamente il timbro adatto agli attori degli anni '30!Peccato, perché vederlo col doppiaggio originale sarebbe interessante.

Il film è una commedia piena di ironia e di un romanticismo che sarebbe auspicabile tornasse anche ai giorni nostri. Cary Grant è buffo e volutamente "goffo" come non mai, impacciato e un po' tonto, completamente perso e immerso in ciò che la stupenda e decisa Katharine Hepburn lo costringe a fare. Equivoci, situazioni bizzarre, risate, scandiscono questa commedia che per nulla risente del tempo e degli anni passati da quando è stata girata. Il romanticismo presente nella storia si lega con una fantastica leggerezza tipica della visione sentimentale dell'epoca. Ed in un certo senso, vale la pena dirlo, la storia stessa potrebbe essere di ispirazione per gli innamoramenti moderni che troppo spesso han perso l'effetto della magia e dello stupore che domina questa buffa e adorabile storia portata sullo schermo dal regista Howard Hawks.Mi sento di consigliarlo a tutti gli amanti del genere e anche a chi vuole scoprire la commedia americana degli anni 40. Non per nulla vedrete uno dei migliori 100 film americani mai prodotti secondo la classifica dell'American Film Institute (che lo ha anche classificato al 14esimo posto delle migliori commedie americane mai prodotte nella storia di Hollywood).Degno di nota il secondo DVD con la versione colorizzata: un simpatico regalo anche se la magia resa dalla versione B/N del primo DVD non ha paragoni.

Une comédie américaine désopilante telle qu'on pouvait en faire dans le cinéma d'avant-guerre. Un scénario original garni de quiproquos rigolos. Des acteurs savoureux avec, en-tête, Katherine Hepburn et Carey Grant. Un léopard (en réalité un jaguar) étonnant doublé d'un chien qui ne donne pas sa place. Voilà comment l'on peut résumer ce film que je recommande entre tous.

Il film è una classica commedia americana degli anni '50 con due splendidi interpreti d'alta classe come Cary Grant e Katerine Hepburn. Bisogna essere appassionati per questo genere di film con un ritmo molto diverso da quelli attuali ma, molte volte più piacevoli e ci aiutano a riscoprire il piacere del divertimento e delle situazioni dette "commedie rosa". Consigliato agli intenditori di vecchi film.

Il film è un esempio mirabile di come il cinema e la stessa Hollywood di una volta fossero capaci di fare film gustosissimi, dal ritmo perfetto, senza nulla fuori posto, che intrattenevano senza umiliare l'intelligenza ma anzi, stimolandola attraverso la risata.Howard Hawks dimostra la sua capacità di passare dal registro del western, più lento ma con improvvise accelerazioni e cambi di tono (da Un Dollaro d'Onore al Fiume Rosso), a quello della commedia metropolitana, creando affreschi di persone, personaggi ed epoche intere senza risultare datati ma al contrario sempre attuali e godibilissimi.Detto questo, però, non capisco come le altre recensioni abbiano del tutto ignorato il fatto che questa edizione, apparentemente "deluxe" (doppio dvd, contenuti speciali, addirittura con seconda versione del film "colorizzata") sia in realtà deludente, almeno a livello di film. Oltre al ridoppiaggio della traccia italiana (per carità, ben fatto, ma incomparabile alle voci dell'epoca, e piatto a livello di profondità) presenta una qualità del video in bianco e nero veramente imbarazzante: sembra la copia di un vhs. E bel coraggio scrivere anche in evidenza che trattasi della rimasterizzazione del film: ma quale? ma dove? Peccato perchè l'edizione, per gli altri aspetti (vedi il documentario) era anche apprezzabile.

It is Cary Grant in this movie, that we all want to be with, dream to have an attention of. Yet he is, as he has to be, preoccupied with Katherine Hepburn character. He is hilarious. It is a mega-silly script, that Howard Hawks is introducing to us and the characters played in "Bringing up Baby". But it works, thanks to a genuine appeal of Cary Grant. At 34 years of age, Cary Grant is not only presenting us with his fresh, unforgettable, young, handsome persona. He plays superbly. He is authentic, he is funny, as the script calls for. The whole movie has a lasting value and significance, because Howard Hawks knew, that with Cary Grant in it he will have another hit. Another brilliance and repeated success. In fact only Cary Grant can play so convincingly, so superbly and have us roar with laughter as he executes, yet another of his masterful gimmicks here. This is why we count this movie in so gladly and relish it gleefully.

Il film è un classico della commedia americana e di tutto il cinema. Gli attori e il regista e tutto il cast (ghepardo compreso...) sono in stato di grazia e questa deliziosa edizione in 2 DVD lo conferma al 100%. Interessante l'esperimento della pellicola colorizzata sul primo dischetto, dove i tecnici si sono divertiti a ritoccare i temi cromatici e le nuances dei costumi, delle scenografie e degli esterni, immaginando (o inventando?) quelli originali con risultati non sempre eccelsi ma apprezzabili per la buona volontà. Sono presenti pure alcuni extra con note bibliografiche del cast e galleria fotografica del materiale pubblicitario dell'epoca. Audio italiano e inglese rimasterizzato in Dolby con i pro e i contro di una traccia sonora vecchia di 75+ anni ma comunque buona per farci gustare ancora una volta le rocambolesche avventure di Kate, Cary e ovviamente Baby! E occhio all'ottimo prezzo di Amazon!

This Warner Home Video DVD edition of Bringing Up Baby is a good bargain at the current low Amazon price.Special features include a commentary by Peter Bogdanovich and five trailers of Howard Hawks films (including the trailer for Bringing Up Baby).The same edition and special features are available in the Turner Classic Movies 4-film Katharine Hepburn collection, where Bringing Up Baby is on a two-sided disk with The Philadelphia Story. However, while the TCM 4-movie collections are a great price and usually of high physical quality, I had bad luck with that set: I purchased it twice, with Bringing Up Baby skipping scenes or skipping uncontrollably, so the sets had to be returned. In the end, I purchased the single DVD edition and it has no problems.The movie itself is very funny, perhaps the wildest and most fast-paced of all "screwball comedies" of the 30s and 40s. I wouldn't have believed that Hepburn could do comedy, but she is great at it. Cary Grant is in good form as well, as are all the supporting actors -- May Robson, Charlie Ruggles, etc. This is one of the earliest of the screwball comedies (1938) but ranks up there with the best. There is plenty of physical comedy that is very well done, as well as very witty dialogue delivered with precise comic timing; you have to be paying attention to catch everything. The writers of that era were as brilliant as the actors.It might be argued that this film is extreme in lunacy of plot and characters even for a screwball comedy, and for that reason some might prefer others with a more measured pace. If so, I'd recommend The Devil and Miss Jones, Easy Living, or Ball of Fire. This one has more of the rapid-fire feel of Arsenic and Old Lace. But I don't see how anyone who likes movies of the 30s and 40s could possibly dislike this film.The film is, as usual, in black and white. The picture seems a little on the dark side, visually, but Boganovich in his commentary indicates that this was intentional on Hawks' part, so there is nothing wrong with your DVD copy if the film doesn't seem as bright as others of the era.I'm not sure if any restoration was done on the picture. There are no obvious flaws in it, but it doesn't seem quite as sparkling and crisp as some other films of that era that have been restored by Criterion, etc. But once you get into the story you don't notice such things, because the picture is so funny.The movie itself is probably worth close to a 9 out of 10 for the genre. The DVD commentary is good, albeit not stellar. When you combine the commentary, the movie, and the price, this package deserves 5 stars.

Ya tenía la película en una edición de Manga Films. La imagen es fantastica, así como el sonido y subtítulos. Del doblaje no puedo opinar porque lo he visto en versión original. Como no la han sacado en blu-ray, esta es una restauración bastante buena, desde luego ni comparación con la que tenía antes.

Film divertentissimo, tipica commedia americana degli anni trenta. La versione in bianco e nero è decisamente più bella di quella a colori.La Hepburn, in tutti i suoi film, dimostra che non è necessario essere particolarmente belle per essere delle grandi attrici.

Natürlich schon immer ein toller Film! Aber die englischen Einfügungen haben die Freude beim Betrachten mit meinen Enkeln geschmälert, sie sind unnötig wie ein Kropf!deshalb !!! ein Stern Abzug.
