Spyderco Manix 2 Lightweight Folding Pocket Knife, PlainEdge

I want to be honest and mention I just recieved this knife yesterday. This is my initial impressions only and will be updated as time goes on, good or bad. This knife appears to be an amazing piece of engineering. The weight is so little that this rather large knife iterally dissappears once it is clipped onto your pocket. It is thin enough that your hand can easily slip past it to any other contents in your pocket, and the material is not harsh and abrasive. I would imagine that this combination of handle scales and pocket clip would be ideal to keep your pants in good shape (not abrading the material). As an example, I wear polyester hiking pants often, and I have to be careful what knives I carry so as to keep them nice. The handle is extremely grippy and ergonomic (I have medium to large hands), and if the handle weren't enough the jimping and choil provide excellent traction on the blade surface as well. The knife itself is constructed with a combonation of torx bolt and pinned construction (torx on the knife pivot, and bottom of handle where the pocket clip is) and feels very secure. I am sure if it rattled apart Spyderco would replace it, though I just don't see it happening in every day use. Speaking of the construction, a few people here commented on the handle material as being too weak, and that the steel lined manix being so far superior. How sad it is that our poor soldiers have been running around with weakly constructed M4 rifles that are made predomenently from a Fiberglass Reinforced Co-Polomyr nearly identicle to the materials in this knife handle. I personally can attest to the durability of this material, and millions of soldiers can as well. The blade itself locks up as solid as a rock, yet glides effortlessly to open or close. The cutting edge is the sharpest I have ever seen with possible exception to my own Morakniv Classic, though I still believe that this knife has the edge (Ha). As stated, I will update this as I go, but for now, I am very happy to have spent the money on this knife. Also as an aside, the price dropped after I ordered it (the day after I received it) and after contacting Amazon, they are refunding me the difference. All in all, fantastic experience. --------------------UPDATE 8-19-14------------------------- I took this knife on two significant outings over the last few weeks, where it was my main or only blade used. The first was backpacking in the Colorado rockies, where the knife withstood use for everything from fire making, food prep, and significant weather. I also used the knife for whitling wood, and after the trip, the blade was still pristine (no nics in the blade, no stains and razor sharp). This weekend, I went on a four day camping trip with my family at Terryall Resevior. I used this knife exclusively for everything you would use a knife for in the wilderness, including cutting down a few smaller Aspen trees. It handled all tasks perfectly, and to my surprize the knife is still razor sharp (I carved wood for hours on this trip, and have shredded many knife blades attempting to carve half of what I was able to do with this knife). For me, I am completely sold on this knife, and this blade steel. I beat the crap out of it, and it still cuts like new, shows no signs of wear and continues to be my favorite knife. --------------------UPDATE 1-30-15------------------------- After much use I did finally put a chip in the blade. I was carving a walking stick with a bear head on the top. There was a bit of a knot in the wood, and though the knife carved everything fine, once I got home, I realized there was a chip in the knife... This is where the BD1 steel really comes into play. For as sharp as this knife is, and as well as it holds a cutting edge, it is very easy to sharpen and reprofile. The knife is again shaving sharp, and after all that I have put it through it has no blade play at all (without needing to tighten the pivot screw), and is just as solid as day one. This is a fantastic knife that will always be with me when I go back packing.

I've spent a bit of time with this knife, and there is no doubt its worth every dime. Showed up mega-sharp with all the paperwork. You get excited when it shows up, but with all of the knock-offs you want to be sure. I made one slight adjustment to the torx pivot to get it to engage faster, it didn't not change the centering at all. This is a big blade, yet it weighs nothing. Some say the FRN handles feel cheap, but for the weight considering the size of the blade, come on man. Get G-10 and something with liners if you don't care about weight. This is a business blade. Locks up perfectly, no play at anyway, anyhow. This thing can handle a ton of tasks. It's a perfect blade to carry if you get caught needing a more robust blade by surprise...and again, does not weigh you down. Just consider what your every day tasks are, go from there. I honestly think for this build, steel and ease of use, this really tough to beat. Best of luck finding a winner. *Quick update, this blade came from Knife Country, fulfilled by Amazon. Their response to questions and customer service are excellent. I will always have peace of mind ordering items that originate from their firm. I will also make it a point to look for their name when ordering. Hope that is help for those shopping in the Amazon "Sea". *Update 2, the steel on this knife is nails...used it a bit, neighbor took it and was able to take hair off the back of his neck. Touched it up with a Norton stone, it got sharper...love it. This thing is good.

As with every Spyderco knife I've owned through the years, I am always impressed with what I get for the money. Their knives always come razor sharp right out of the box. They use excellent materials. Their fit, finish and attention to detail are superb, all the way thru the way the blade deploys, seats in the handle and their awesome pocket clips. About this knife, this one is no exception to what I've come to expect in a Spyderco. This is the first Spyderco I've owned that wasn't made in Seki, Japan. I was actually reluctant at first to go with a non Japanese made Spidey until I watched a nutnfancy video review of this knife on youtube. If you're on the fence, I recommend you go watch that vid. He goes into a very detailed review and makes some excellent points. Now that I've handled and use this knife, I have no reluctance whatsoever for a Spyderco made anywhere in the world. First off, the pics really don't do this knife justice. I know this is purely subjective, but, in my opinion, this is a great looking knife close up and in person. I particularly like the finish on the blade, and while it does scratch, I find that just adds character. For the size blade you get, it really is a light weight package. It rides in my front pocket and I don't really notice the weight on the knife at all. That is impressive to me for the size knife it is, especially when compared to it's G10/milled out liner brethren. Blade deployment is buttery smooth and the tension is perfect for me right out of the box. It's not to hard where a good flick from my thumb or finger won't open it, and it's not too loose where it's ever come open while in my pocket. The lock is stiff and does take some practice to close with one hand, but it is possible. The technique I use is I bury the heel of the handle in the palm heel of my hand and actuate the lock with thumb and forefinger. I don't use the fob type lanyards on any of my knives that I see other people use, but I could see where grasping a lanyard like that could provide enough tension in lieu of my palm heel technique. This knife also feels great in my hand. The texturing and the size/shape of the handle (ergonomics) make this one of my favorite knives in hand. The jimping is typical Spyderco, aggressive, near perfectly executed in my opinion. It allows you to choke up on the blade and gives you really excellent traction, even in slippery conditions you can really lock it in. In my experience with this BD-1 steel, I'm a fan. I've noticed that it holds up to the elements fairly well (no sign of any corrosion) and while not the hardest and toughest blade material, it is really easy to maintain a keen edge. A few passes on my Sharpmaker and strop, and I can usually get it hair popping sharp in a matter of minutes. I typically like to put up all my knives clean and with a light coat of oil, but I feel that I don't have to baby this one as much.

I like this lightweight Manix 2 knife much more than I expected. The locking mechanism is fun to fiddle with and is extremely strong; and the large leaf blade is pretty much the exact same length as the PM2 - and it seems very close to the same thickness too. Out of the box, this knife was wicked sharp and perfectly centered, and the action opens easily and drop-closes exactly like a well-adjusted knife should. I assume it has dual washers. The handle has a nice surface texture and a great wire clip, but it is not particularly comfortable to hold and use for lengthy sessions. Unfortunately the edges are squared off like on a G2 PM2 with no added contours or more radius-ed edges like on the PM3 lightweight. Much of the genius of the Manix is in the handle profile and the integrated choils that extend onto the blade for multiple grip positions. I understand now why for many Spyder people, this is their favorite knife. The only things that keep it from being a perfect EDC is the small-radiused handle and the fact that the locking action requires a spring loaded button that can clog with dirt and potentially jam or break. For the money, this lightweight knife, especially in SPY27 or even the slightly more expensive MagnaCut, is a great value and an extremely well-designed and useful folding knife. A Spyderco legend!

This is the most expensive knife I own. It's also the most expensive knife I plan on owning. I know that $75 isn't a massive expense for a knife, especially when prices can reach $1000. Point being, I use my knives hard. Probably harder than I should. I don't wanna drop a grand on something I'll beat the crap out of. Can a $1000 knife handle it? I have no doubt it could, probably very very well too. Having said that, this is the best knife I own, period. I own Kershaws, SOGs, Gerbers, and Spydercos, among others. The Manix 2 is phenomenal. The steel is excellent. The design is excellent. The fit and finish is excellent. This knife is perfect. The handle is a beautiful translucent blue color. The bi-directional grip works astoundingly well. The ergonomics are top notch. This knife is locked in place. The jimping provides serious traction without causing discomfort. There are no steel liners, making this knife very light. The weight is also balanced well. The lack of liners has caused concerns with other enthusiasts, I don't see that being an issue. The wire pocket clip carries low, not SOG low, but low enough to not draw attention. The clip itself is tip up, left or right side carry. The handle is pinned together, which is a point of contention to some. However, on my model (and all new models) the blade has an adjustable pivot screw. Very nice. The ball bearing lock is awesome. The spring is stiff, but the cage that the bearing is in has jimping as well, making this knife a dream to close. Left or right handed, you only need one hand. Deployment is slightly stiff out of box, but I have no concerns that it will be buttery smooth in time. Flicking the blade open is a cinch and the pop of the lock engaging is satisfying. The blade is your typical Spyderco leaf shaped blade, full flat ground on my model. This baby can slice like a light saber. The mirror-esque finish on the blade is gorgeous and the black 'Spydie' on the blade stands out very nicely. I think the blade is thick enough to not be classified as light duty, I wouldn't pry with it (obviously), but I bet it could handle some robust tasks. The oversized thumbhole is awesome. Works just the same as any other spyderhole but looks so nice. The steel is CTS BD1. This Carpenter steel is sharp, tough and very rust resistant. A particular YouTuber left this knife, blade down, in a heap of snow overnight in one of his videos. The blade showed absolutely zero ill effects from that test. Big thumbs up. My knife (hell, EVERY Spyderco I own) came wicked sharp. Spyderco releases the most stupid sharp knives out of the box, at least in my experience. The last, and I think, best thing about this knife? It's made right here on OUR soil. Golden, Colorado U.S.A Earth, according to my Manix 2. I have been supremely satisfied with every Spyderco I have bought and used. The bar has been set very high now with the Manix 2. 6 out of 5 stars from me. Like the title states, worth every single penny.

I own one of the original Manix models from the early part of the century. It is a great knife, tough and sturdy and it is made so strong it probably would last the normal user a couple of lifetimes. It's heavy but the heavy is in the right places for a hard use knife. It has one fault that is shared with the Manix 2 models--a wide profile that takes up a lot of room in the user's pocket when clipped inside. This width is not so much a limitation in the Manix 2 but it is enough to still be noticeable and sometimes infuriating. The Manix 2 Translucent Blue model doesn't fit in the knife pockets of my Tru-Spec cargo pants due to its width. It does fit in the side pockets of every pair of pants I own but it gets in the way of accessing other items in the same pocket. You have to figure out a comfortable place to carry this knife. For me, it's most often in my back pocket. Unfortunately, it uses the Spyderco wire pocket clip--a device I do not like. But for some reason, the wire clip seems better suited to the Manix 2 Lightweight than the other Spydercos I own that came with the same clip design. Go figure. Unlike the original Manix, the Manix 2 Lightweight doesn't weigh a lot. It has no liner and the handle material is a copolymer that seems very strong yet feathery light in weight. The Translucent Blue model is...well, translucent and blue. Light shows through it at certain angles and it looks really nice. It sorta reminds me of the plastic water pistols we used as kids that came in various translucent colors. The difference is the plastic in the Manix 2 is tough whereas the plastic in those water pistols was cheap and brittle and fell apart easily. I like the way the knife looks and I love the light weight. It also feels comfortable in my hand, like all Spydercos of my acquaintance. Despite my gripes about the wide profile in the pocket and the wire clip, I carry this knife more than I thought I would. The blade steel is BD-1. It's nothing knife knuts get excited over but it seems to work well in this knife. I keep my knives clean so they don't often get corroded and I sharpen them often so they stay sharp. Needless to say, I have no problems cutting stuff with this knife. The Manix 2 also has a locking system akin to the famous Benchmade Axis Lock although reportedly it is stronger. I have a couple of Benchmade knives with Axis locks and I like them and I've never noticed them being delicate. The Manix 2 lock is a little stiffer than the Axis locks I've used but, again, I have no problem utilizing the knife. Overall, I like this knife more than I thought I would. It's not my favorite Spyderco but it ranks pretty high on the list of those models I've owned. It's lightweight, can be easily sharpened, feels ergonomic and, despite reminding me of the toy plastic water pistols I played with as a kid, it seems tough enough to handle most cutting tasks.

I already have a G10 Manix 2 with Cruwear steel but wanted a lighter version for carrying in shorts, etc. So I got the all black Manix 2 LW in BD1N steel and it is great. Very light for its size and this one is almost perfect right out of the box. I already have another knife in BD1N and find it to be a great hard use EDC steel. Yes it dulls quicker than many other steels but it doesn't chip easily and it strops back up quickly. And this knife just feels great in the hand. Love it!

Did a ton of research on which spyderco to get and even got some others before this one. Usually don’t do reviews but this thing is sweet. Fits the hand very well and has a solid lock up. The lock is a bit stiff out the box but not a big deal. Seems like a no nonsense do it all type of knife.

Hasta ahora, Amazon México se sigue llevando las cinco estrellas tan sólo por el servicio que he recibido: puntualidad, eficiencia y excelente trato; ahora, del artículo propiamente dicho: pagué lo adecuado (no más ni tampoco menos que en los sitios web como KnifeCenter ó KnifeWorks). La caja llegó en buen estado. La pieza posee una calidad excelente. La recomiendo al 100%, incluso, si ya cuentan con la versión regular de G10 y acero S30VN. La hoja viene con un acabado diferente, que no es ése acabado satinado y brillante de otros modelos, pero tampoco es un acabado stonewashed. Resulta agradable a la vista y al tacto. Además, no sólo es ergonómica y de una ligereza extraordinaria, sino que resulta segura y fuerte en las tareas de corte. El filo, por otro lado, llegó casi, casi impecable: supongo que, debido a las condiciones de almacenamiento, la hoja traía una especie de decoloración del lado contrario al Clip, que afectaba precisamente ése lado del filo. Limpie con cuidado el área, que quedó normal arriba en la hoja pero no así en tres áreas muy marcadas en el filo, visibles a contraluz. Fuera de ése detalle todo normal, pues incluso la caja no mostraba humedad ni nada que hiciera pensar en un accidente con agua o algo parecido.

Rasiermesserscharf, gute und sichere Verriegelung über den Ball Bearing Lock, mit drei Unzen ein echtes Leichtgewicht und optisch absolut klasse! Ein Stern Abzug, da das Messer nicht in Originalverpackung ankam, warum auch immer. Tolles Messer! Ich benutze es zu Hause für diverse Schneidaufgaben.

Das Manix2 ist ein mittelgroßer Einhandfolder von Spyderco mit einem Spitzen Preis-Leistungsverhältnis, Gerade in dieser Lightweight Version ohne die Stahl Einlagen eine absolute Empfehlung als EDC. Man sollte sich aber bewusst sein, dass die Verriegelung die hier verwendet wird nichts mit dem ähnlich aussehenden Axis-Lock von Benchmade zu tun hat. Diese hier ist nur bedingt mit einer Hand zu schließen da einfach ein recht großer Kraftaufwand nötig ist für die Entriegelung. Das sollte man evtl. bedenken.
