OtherWorlds: How to Imagine, Paint and Create Epic Scenes of Fantasy

Tom Kidd discusses many things essential for artists who want to paint not only fantasy art but landscape/matte painting also. He has deep insight into how light and colour interact with everyday outside objects such as trees, snow, water and clouds and encourages you to look for these things yourself as you observe nature. There are also some good comments on how to use your imagination and to build up stories to back your creations to make them appear real. I would have liked to see his tutorials go more into his thinking and inspiration of ideas rather than a 'how to' which is why I only gave it 4 stars but really this is definitely a must have for artists alike.

Yep. There have been quite a few artbooks this year, and I liked a lot of them, in particular another very recent release, "Middle-Earth: Visions of a Modern Myth " by Donato Giancola, but this one is even better. It ranks alongside John Howe's artbook ( 2007) from Impact as the best one I have seen from this publisher, and alongside the great Charles Vess artbook from Dark Horse ( 2009) as my overall Fantasy art favorite.Stunning, stunning illustrations. Needless to say I am a huge fan of Tom Kidd's work and if you are too, you will find here a vast array of dazzling work, as well as how-to instructions. Various topics are detailed, as you can also see in Amazon's search inside function. Kidd is one of the best illustrators the SFF field has ever had and this wonderful book underlines that even more.Highly recommended.

I particularly enjoyed the 2nd chapter “Techniques, Theory, & Subject Matter. With one or more illustrations per page there was a lot to learn. This chapter covers the following:Warm and cool colorsLayers and aerial perspectiveDragonsDistant objectsCompositionActionMoodGardensImaginative creaturesMaking believable animalsOuter space paintingCloudsSnow and iceTreesNight scenesRocksStructuresAerial yachtsThere is commentary for every illustration so you can focus your attention on what is to be learned. The variety of colors used helps you see when they are most effective.

Insightful, informative and enjoyable. I found his techniques to be very interesting and his use of color to be very astute.

the cover of this book is beautiful the title of the book is not black the letter have a glossy red and rest is matt finish cover. i just started reading the but and what i love about it is that he is not telling us was right from wrong he doesn't force the reader to do things his way hey encourage you to find what fells best for you and the images threw out the book are beautiful and inspirational.

This is a great book for any student of painting - or any pro! I use it and highly recommend it to my drawing and painting students at the Colleges, where I teach. The printing is very good, the color in the book is excellent and the information is top notch. Every animation student, every artist interested in fantasy should study it. It is an important addition to your library.

Not very thrilled with this book. I expected more in the way of "thinking" and less of the doing. There was plenty of basic "how to paint" in it, but not very much of the "Imagining". It received a quick read through, and then passed on to a friends 13 year old son. (He loves it). Sorry about this, but not what I expected.

Its ok,love to lirns omethong new...it is not a bad produkt, it cood be better but I like it . I will recomend it

It does have some useful information, but if your imagination is bad already, it might not help. The art is complicated and interesting, but not always vibrant looking, kind of earthy.

This is a beautiful book, filled with wonderful, inspiring pictures, and genuinely useful tips. Buy it.
