The very name of the brand conveys a deep respect toward craftsmanship and considered as familiar by citizens the world-over. So as a “citizen” of the world, we bear the responsibility to help cultivate a culture of positive change and on-going evolution through our craft. We take that mission seriously and steadfastly welcome what the future may bring. As a true manufacture d’horlogerie, CITIZEN integrates a comprehensive manufacturing process from creating individual components to a watch’s final assembly. It’s an artisan’s approach to watch making based on pushing forward the boundaries of technology and leveraging our experience toward exploring new possibilities. One pivotal technological breakthrough was the development of a light-driven watch. CITIZEN pioneered this engineering innovation well ahead of other watch manufacturers as early as 1976, which led to the launch of the highly acclaimed Eco-Drive in 1995. Utilizing electrical power converted from virtually any light source, this extraordinary innovation changed forever the way watches could be powered. Eco-Drive eliminated the need to ever replace batteries, which made it especially beneficial to areas where such specialist batteries were not obtainable. This leveled the field for citizens of virtually every country to be able to experience unrestricted joy of wearing and using a CITIZEN watch. The product development policy, “The Fusion of Technology and Beauty,” remains a constant motivation for us to merge cutting-edge technology with perfection of design beauty, which as a consequence inspires people to strive to be their best at any time. Stunningly GORGEOUS timepiece! Eco-drive is GREAT!
This is a standard-sized (40mm; it will not overwhelm your wrist like larger designs, although I did think the watch would be a bit bigger), visually awesome watch that you can wear daily, and the 'Eco Drive' technology means you never have to wind it, move or shake it (like an automatic), or change batteries. What a concept! The typical wearer will wear it enough (several times a week) such that it keeps a good charge by being exposed to everyday indoor light and outdoor sunlight. It looks and feels expensive as well, with a good amount of weight to it. The only drawback (if you want to call this one) is that you will hear the phrase 'nice watch!' on a frequent basis! Incidentally, this exact model watch was featured in an excellent article on Citizen Watches in the April 2006 issue of 'Watch Time' Magazine!UPDATE 11/2014: This is STILL my main, daily watch after all these years, and it still works flawlessly! INCREDIBLE! This is one well-made product!2nd UPDATE 2/2020: Again, this is STILL my main, daily wear watch, and it works perfectly after 14 years! I leave it on a sunny window ledge every now and then, and it retains power. No problems whatsoever! Probably one of the top 5 products i've ever bought in my life, in terms of reliability and trouble-free usage.

My impression a year after purchasing...
...is that this watch has far surpassed my expectations.I originally purchased this time-piece because of the amazing design and the fact that it uses the Eco-Drive technology to recharge itself. After having used the 8700 for 13 months, I've never had to go out of my way to ensure the watch is getting enough light to charge the battery. I've never seen the second-hand moving at 2-second intervals (indication that the battery is getting low). The technology has proven itself. The very first thing I noticed is that the watch is very sturdy and heavier than I expected, which gives it a high-quality feel. I was unaccustomed to the extra weight, but a couple weeks later I forgot to put on my watch and felt naked without it.I also think it's important to note that this is the first watch I've purchased that cost me more than $10 or $20. That being the case, I wasn't sure I'd feel comfortable wearing the watch since I don't usually even wear jewelry-type accessories. That concern didn't last long and I quickly found that the watch fits with anything. It's rugged enough to fit with jeans and a dirty t-shirt, but the style also looks great with slacks and a button-up.I've been so impressed with this model that I've also been considering buying another Eco-drive (the white-faced 8700). I recommend this to anyone who wants a functional, stylish time-piece.UPDATE: It's been 2 years and still working like it's new out of the box. My biggest complaint about this watch is that I haven't found another that looks this good, so I can't justify buying a new one.

2 years and still going
I bought this watch in August of 2010 and I wear it everyday. It's kept time pretty well and doesn't skip ahead/behind. It's not too heavy and the watch dial itself isn't that large so it fits me really well (I have small wrists). The watch itself is built extremely tough and is pretty rugged but looks good for any occasion. The watch is pretty easy to use and adjust once you read the manual, and I only read it for 5 minutes. I'm not going to say anything about the alarm function because I never use it and I don't even know how to set it anyways. My only gripes with the watch is that:1. Citizen should have made the watch face from something more scratch resistant then the "Mineral" material they use. I know I'm going to sound whiny but if I am paying $356 for a watch I'd like to have something that does not scratch so easily. Though I will be honest, you can only see the scratches when you look at it from an angle on your wrist and it isn't that big of a deal (also keep in mind I have worn this watch practically everyday to everything for two years...it's going to happen)2. The hands glow in the dark, everything else doesn't. I like being able to at least see the numbers and hands in the dark. While all the numerals and lettering are in silver, it's still kind of hard to see. Again, nothing major. If you are sitting on the fence with this one, do yourself a favor and buy it. It is my first watch from the Citizen company and I am definitely going to buy another watch from them.

Very nice watch as expected from citizen
Very nice watch as expected from citizen. Only thing is bracelet very small on this watch and in order to fit me I would of had to add 4 to 5 links so I returned it.

B. Google.

Fantastic eco-drive watch!
I had my eye on this watch for about 6 months - I visited various watch shops to look at it - to see if I could justify its high price. I can safely say it was worth every penny. I had some early misgivings about it - the size for one. I liked watches from Armani and Hugo Boss but their diameters at 42/43mm were way too big. This watch has a diameter of only 39mm but I have very small wrists so it was about the right size for me. My other gripe was the strap and its vertical links. I had generally only ever worn watches with normal horizontal links so the verticals ones looked a little odd to me. That soon disappeared when I had it on my wrist - it looks great! The watch face looks amazing - roman numerals is something you don't really see anymore so it adds to its uniqueness. It has a perceptual calendar up to the year 2100 so it'll never lose track of the date. It was all set up to the correct date and time out of the box. This is also an eco-drive watch which is powered by light. It will never need a battery. The only slight negative that others have pointed out is that the watch face isn't as blue as it appears in the images - it's a really dark blue, almost black which is a shame. It's still a fantastic watch though.

Gorgeous watch
Bought this watch in July as a gift to myself, and was obsessing over this watch for a few weeks prior. The biggest draw for Citizen is definitely the Eco Drive property of never having to put in new batteries, thus avoiding tampering. The watch came in two business days from Amazon.ca, and it came with everything shown in the images. It had a Citizen five year warranty, and instructions as well as a CD for easier time setup. The watch itself is absolutely stunning. The band, dial, colour, for me it was perfect.I do however have two growing pains with it. It is a heavy watch, took some getting used to. It also, like many more 'luxurious' watches doesn't have a luminous button like digital watches or cheaper brands, but the hands will glow in the dark so that offsets that. Other than that, no damage thus far and it's beautiful. As a plus, I bought this watch at ~$380 CAN, only to notice it was being sold at $256 less than two weeks later. Amazon.ca refunded me the difference when I told them of this on chat support. Great watch, great customer service.

Quality manufacture but functional errors
Had a similar Citizen before which was much better. They are tricky to use but if you're a tech nerd like me that's not a problem. The main problem with this watch is the crown ends up puling out while on your wrist, this stops the watch abd then you turn up late to important events. The previous model I had, had two lugs either side if the crown to stop thus from happening. I've no idea why Citizen have abandoned these!
