I realized that what I had written would make a good review of my own
Disclaimer: I wrote a response to one of the other reviewers in this thread who downgraded the case a little. I thought he had not given the case a fair shake. After writing that response, I realized that what I had written would make a good review of my own, so I adapted that response a little and put it here as a review. So, if it seems repetitious, well it is...When I first got the case, I thought that the flap that holds the cover in place as a stand was too difficult to get outt. I also thought that the cover initially seemed not positioned or weighted correctly as a stand to hold the ipad up.But then I took a look at the thoughtful instructions that Kavaj takes the time to include with its cases and I realized that this case is real leather, not some "faux" product with the built-in advantages of plastic. Leather needs a little break-in period, and with a short amount of time, it becomes pliable and more workable. So let me make these suggestions based on my own experience:1. Get the stand flap out. Use a tool of some kind if you have to. Then bend it back and forth a little bit, just a few times to loosen it up. Then insert the cover in it and push it in. You'll find that in a surprisingly short time, that flap becomes compliant, will pull out easily, and will then hold the cover in place perfectly.2. Regarding the cover acting as a stand: almost the same advice as above. Connect the cover to the flap and place the ipad in the case down on a flat, hard surface (a table top will do). Initially, the cover has some resistance at the creased area where it's supposed to sit flat on the table. But, like that flap, it needs to be worked in a little. What I did was I set it up as a stand and then I pressed down on the top of the case until the leather "broke in" at the place where it was supposed to bend. It only took me 5 or 6 "pushes" down to get the leather to comply. Now, it stands just fine.Real leather sometimes needs a little patience and a little break-in time. Have you ever tried to go out and play baseball or softball with a new glove? Players spend hours throwing a ball into their new gloves to get the pockets pliable. Thensome of them wrap a ball in the pocket when they put the glove away. No one complains that their new leather glove didn't work well on the field immediately. The same should be true for these leather cases.I have to say that I love this case. With the 10 minutes I spent breaking it in, it is arguably the thinnest, lightest, best-looking, and most practical case I have had. At the beginning, I thought I would have added a flap from the back to the front to help keep the front closed, but I can see now that somehow it doesnt actually need that either. If you like the elegance of leather, don't hesitate to buy this case.

Beautiful Cases & Awesome Customer Service!
I love Kavaj & love their cases, and would recommend them as the case of choice for anyone. I recently purchased the Berlin case for my I-Pad and could not be more pleased. But equally impressive was the Kavaj customer service experience concerning this purchase, which I'd like to highlight here.Last month I purchased a Kavaj case for my new I-Phone 7 (Dallas case, which I love) and new I-Pad Air 2 (Hamburg case), after considerable research. Unfortunately, the I-Pad case, while beautifully designed, did not have the leather tightly fitted, and therefore the leather looked and felt "loose." I was candidly disappointed, and choose to send an e-mail to Kavaj about this disappointment, including a couple of pictures. I received an e-mail response within a couple of hours, and Kavaj (1) sincerely apologized for the imperfections, (2) immediately issued a refund (which I'd not asked for, by the way), (3) encouraged me to replace the case, if I choose, and (4) because Kavaj did not want me inconvenienced to have to return the first case, advised that I could keep or do whatever I wished with the problematic case. I could not imagine a more prompt or gracious customer service response. To complete the story, I proceeded to replace the Hamburg I-Pad case with the slightly simpler Berlin model, and also shifted to the Cognac color from the Black. Good decisions. The Cognac brown color is truly beautiful and elegant (although I liked the Black as well). And the slightly simpler Berlin model is wonderfully thin, feels smooth & rich, and eminently practical. I'd read a few reviews indicating that when the case is put in the "stand" position, it is sometimes unstable and falls over. May I say that this is easily addressed by simply "breaking in" the leather where it's supposed to bend. This took less than a minute & involved maybe 6-8 "pushes down" to break in the letter and get it to comply. Another reviewer has covered this more extensively, as does the thoughtful Kavaj instructions that are provided. The two stand positions work great, and I find them very stable. In a word, Kavaj cases are beautifully designed, wonderfully functional, elegant and very, very reasonably priced. I love this company & love their products.Brian W.

Elegant leather case is a treasure
Beautiful feel and look. Snug and secure fit. Light weight and handy to use.I bought this case after discovering (almost inadvertently) in my searches that some iPad covers will block the two automatic light sensors in the new iPad Air models. I was impressed to find the question had already been answered about this case by the time I discovered it. It saved me from purchasing a different (leather) case that I would certainly have regretted.I agree with the comments about the difficulty (at first) to pull out the support tab in the back. I just tugged on its corners a bit to "bend" them out just enough to get a hold. I have no problems now.As for the comments about it being unstable when standing upright, just follow the video instructions on the KAVA Website to fix this. The one slight disappointment I have is, the automatic off function when I close the cover is a bit "touchy". It does not work as consistently as I might have hoped. Sometimes, I have to slide the lower corner of the cover as it is closed to get the automatic off to "click". Hence the four rather than five stars. I admit, it has worked better with the case now worn in compared to when it was brand new. Time may tell and this problem could go away. Finally, I ended up adding a complementing color leather shoe lace threaded through the top corner hold. I use it to hold a stylus. Yes, the lace could be shorter. But it serves also to wrap around the cover and keep it closed. Here's a picture FWIW.This case comes highly recommended from me.

Great case with minor gripes.
I've had this case a month now. It's beautifully made and very sturdy. It's very slim which was important for me, and it looks great. As the leather gets the occasional scratch though normal use it looks even better to my eye; gives it an authentic look. Two things could be improved. Firstly, as someone else has noted, it does fall over in "tall" mode. Make the small "fold" a little wider guys. Secondly, it's not possible to get a jack plug into the headphone socket as the seam gets in the way. Easy to get around by using the lightening to jack adapter so only annoying when the battery is flat. These are minor gripes - it's a great case and would recommend.Update January, 2019My iPad goes everywhere with me and I use it on an hourly basis for research, writing, work and play. So after two years of use in the KAVAJ leather case an update. Eventually the hard plastic strips which strengthen the leather around the screen split through the leather. Once it starts it progresses quickly, especially on the corners. As one would expect, the leather also stretches. Photos show this better than words.I have no idea how long this case is expected to last so this is not by way of a complaint, more a statement of fact.

Nearly Five Stars
The sleep and wake functions work perfectly when you open and close the lid. The cover is beautifully designed and lighter and cheaper than Apple's equivalent case. A velcro fastener keeps the iPad secure inside, so it will need fall out. Now after a year's use I should note just two niggling problems. 1/ because the iPad Air 2 is so very light, it sometime falls over (forward) when in this case. It needs more slope to be truly stable. 2/ the cover has developed a bulge in the middle, resulting from its being folded every time you stand the case up, and I guess the glue under the leather giving way under this stress (if there is any). Neither of these problems have occurred with previous versions of this case, designed for earlier iPads. These are only minor flaws in what is otherwise a very beautiful product.

Outstanding product !
This is one of three Kavaj cases, having bought my first one for my iPad Air 1, now 2 and an iPad Pro 12.9 one as well. it's genuine leather and has an amazing snug fit, making the iPad barely bigger than the original size ! I cannot foresee any other brand coming close to the top quality, look and fit of the Kavaj. You pay a premium for original Apple and even then, Kavaj is up there with Apple quality. I buy Kavaj irrespective of price anyway. Well done Kavaj, I will continue to use Kavaj to protect my beloved tablets !

Very smart -
I purchased a similar Kavaj black leather cover for my first iPad back in 2012, and have to say that I was more impressed by the overall quality of it than I was this time around. It had a much more ‘hand-finished’ feeling to it, whereas this time the leather was not as good, and the item felt a tad more mass-produced. Having said this, I like the streamlined finish, and am about to order a new one for my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 - so am hoping that it lives up to my first experience!

Not as good quality, time will tell how long it will last!
This is the second Kavaj ipad case i’ve bought as a present for my husband, the first one was in 2016 it last nearly 3 years, was really good quality and arrived in a lovely box. I have just purchased another one to replace the one that was worn out but the quality has definitely changed. It didn't arrive in a box this time it was tissue wrapped inside a plastic bag. It doesn't seem as soft and is definitely thinner material. The case doesn't seem to line up either when closed. Bit disappointed don't feel it will last nearly as long as the last one but time will tell!
