Earth Defense Force Fans might like this!
Fans of the old Earth Defense Force game for the Xbox 360 might like this game. Granted it doesn't take place in Tokyo and soldiers aren't dressed up like power rangers anymore, but the gamemplay and cheesy dialog are still there. This game features a 4 player online cooperative game mode and a 2 player offline split screen game mode and sports a new character class and level-up system. For those who've never played Earth Defense Force, the best way to describe this game would be to say that it is a third person, 100% arcade style shooter game where you run through stages filled to the brim with giant bugs and alien robots that will swarm like crazy and your tasked with the job of blowing them up with any weapons you have. It's an intense, chaotic, flashy, loud and semi-violent game that's more fun when playing with friends who just want to blow up bad guys and have fun fighting aliens that look like they came from a 1960's-1970's black and white horror movie titled "They came from planet Z!"Character classes each have their own special abilities and range from the traditional soldier who specializes in all weapon types but has no special abilities, An engineer class who has the ability to drop sentry turrets, mines and health stations at the cost of using rocket launchers, sniper rifles and assault rifles, a "Jet" class that uses a jet pack for quick maneuvering and energy weapons that are affective against mechanical enemies like "Hectors", and the heavy class which is the tank of the 4 classes, brandishing heavy weapons and having the ability to use a shield that can block incoming attacks. Each character class can level up through use, unlocking new weapons and abilities, except for the soldier who doesn't have any abilities and instead increases his health and armor endurance with each level. Be warned though, this game suffers from "MMORPG" Styles of grinding when you get to higher levels. The game is sadly short with only 5 chapters, each one having up to 6 levels each, and features 3 difficulty settings and an extra game mode that changes up the standard enemies in each stage to make the game more challenging. I definitely recommend playing this game if you're the type that just likes mindless and intense, 90's arcade action style gameplay. There's just an odd sence of nostalgia that from from playing this game that I just can't get over and it takes me back to the days when I used to play Contra on the SNES and Smash TV at the arcade.Note: this game is also available on the Xbox 360, PC and Steam!

EDF Insect Armageddon
This game is a bunch of fun. Lots of bugs and neat upgrades makes things interesting. The graphics are not top-notch, but they are good for this game. Game runs smooth. No problems with controls or graphics.Basically, Earth is being invaded by enemies and they've turned bugs into giant monsters. There are also huge robots to fight. The game is broken into 3 chapters of 5 missions each. A Liason Officer gives you your briefing and helps update battle situations nicely, especially when you come up against opponents you've not yet faced. There are 4 Armor types for your trooper.TrooperStandard armor, faster reload which is nice, and they have the heaviest hitting assault rifles and rocket launchers per level.TacticalSlightly more armor than a trooper, has less firepower early on but has nice upgrades. Also has the same health as a trooper. Tactical can also deploy turrets, which really help out. This is probably most players' choice.JetLess health than any other trooper type, has very fast manueverability. Firepower is in line with tactical.Battle ArmorSLOW. Has a shield and nice clip sizes, reload is long, however. Heavy armor. You have unlimited ammo but guns will run out based on their clip sizes. There are all sorts of guns. Assault Rifles, Shotguns, Sniper Rifles, Grenade Launchers, Rocket Launchers, and Missile Launchers. You will also use base turrets and the occasionaly tank. The enemy is numerous, and there are times when no matter which way you point there is a target. The game campaign mixes up the basic bugs with harder targets, and each mission is a challenge. For Co-op, the squad size is 3 for the missions and 6 for Survival mode. It appears you can only use Troopers in Survival mode, but I have not progressed very far in Survival. If you do not want to play online, no problem! The AI Bots are more than adequete to support you all through the campaign (at least on normal mode).I completed the Campaign with the Trooper and restarted with a Tactical. I like the Tactical best. Good mix of firepower, armor, and movement. This is a great game. MANY enemies will swarm. Anyway, if you are looking for a FUN and not too serious game, check out EDF:IA.
