If you have a lot of CDs, this is handy -- Pioneer PD-F1007 review
I bought one of these Jan. 2, 2000. It still functions. It's basically full, so I picked up another used off Ebay a few months ago and connected them together, a feature that's supported. You can use one remote to access both connected players. The manual explains this, as well as connectivity with other Pioneer components, such as a receiver. That functionality I don't use.I decided to get another used one off Ebay, they are fairly cheap now. Thing is, there is danger in shipping these, they can sustain damage in shipment. I have actually bought 4 of them the last few months, so I have 5. Not one of the used units came without some problem(s). The first one wouldn't function, it showed a U2 failure in the display. I took off the cover and after much wrangling (I was about to give up), I found something that was preventing the carousel from turning, pulled it back to get it out of the way and then it worked OK.The second one I got wouldn't detect a lot of the disks. I used lens cleaning CDs on the unit and after 1/2 dozen passes the unit worked alright. The 3rd one I got arrived absolutely smashed up. UPS had managed to toss the box around so violently that the front panel was broken through in two places. Small pieces of plastic littered the box and the cover was dented in several places. I got a full refund. Later, I taped things together and found that the unit functions except that it doesn't detect properly which slots have disks in them. It sees disks that simply aren't there. I can use the unit but not to move to the next/previous disk, that's screwed up. However, that's not something I do much. The 4th unit I bought as a for-parts/in need of repair unit, which I got cheap (under $50 shipped). It had a U1 error on the display, and since I'd already done a fair amount of research on the unit I realized I had a good chance of being able to fix it. That I did! The arm's nub had slipped out of the track. So, I'll have double units upstairs and downstairs plus an extra for when one of the others breaks down. Now, if you read a lot of reviews of these you'll know that you can't depend on the memory functionality. I discovered that early on and stopped using it. It's a pain to key in titles and artists in the first place using the remote and the PD-F1007 does not support keyboard entry (the PD-F1009 does, but it doesn't support headphone output, a show stopper for me and there are other drawbacks). I have disk info in a computer database and I print reports. I also almost always copy disks that don't have CD Text to CDR adding CD Text featuring Artist/Title/Track info.I NEVER use the Random feature. I would like it if the player would pick random disks and play them through but it doesn't support that. What it does do is play a track, go to another disk and play a random track off that disk, go to another disk, etc. etc. That seems stupid to me and I wouldn't want to make the player remove a disk and insert another after spinning the carousel every new track, that would put a lot more wear on the components than it's worth to me, it's just asking for trouble. On top of that, the mechanical noises of stopping, spinning the carousel and inserting a new disk aren't pleasing. If I'm going to do something like that I'd prefer software and digital files. It's been suggested to me that I rip all my CDs to digital files, say FLAC or MP3, and I may do that eventually, however for the time being these players are reasonably convenient. I'm not at all sure I can get that level of convenience with non-mechanical music playing software/systems. I'll look into it, though

Dead Player
I'm giving 3 stars because it did give several years of good service. Its now dead and will not power up. I'm not going to repair it again, its just too much trouble to do so and its no longer in warranty. The first failure was caused by the feed mechanism jamming this was about two years ago.

Great sound and commodity. But is it reliable?
I had been waiting for such a CD player for a long time, and it was worth it as it sounds great and is very user friendly. I do love the random playing and was about to buy a second one when some trouble stopped me. After less than a year the title, best track selection and custom file memory just vanished away twice in very little time. I had to have it repaired three times to solve the problem. When the memory seemed to be OK, it finally failed again after 10 or 11 months and this time I have no guarantee. It is a pity because the other features are fantastic and it would have been a great buy without these problems.
