If you love Perry you'll probably really love this one
I want to second what several other reviewers have said. I think that's it's quite likely that at least many of the pitch changes were done deliberately by Perry, it's quite noticeable on some parts where there's a cascade of sound effects happening, and then the pitch stuff happens right there too. Buy the disk, sit back, relax, play it, and listen, then decide for yourself. You probably won't regret it if you like Perry at his very best. Big Neck Police and Roast Fish and Cornbread really stand out, but almost through the entire recording you can hear how truly into it the musicians were, on every level, more so in my opinion than on other recordings from the same era like Super Ape. This one to me felt like almost a perfect moment in dub time, captured, thankfully. Re things like tape pitch, keep in mind that early flanger effects were done by adjusting tape speed manually during the mixes, but it's hard to know for sure. To me it didn't matter, this record is smoking. I would however agree that if the tape effects were done deliberately, Perry didn't feel any need to revisit that particular idea in future efforts, heh.

This is unbelievably hot!!
This is how I like my roots reggae, organic, less-than-perfect, and tripped out! Those of you who are complaining about the mastering and recording, I say, "Pfffffttt" to you. Puuulleeeaase. This is so effing inspired and luscious. Perry knows how to Groove.People, chill out, un-critical some, and just enjoy it.Critcizing the production values does not = having musical taste.

Someone PLEASE find the master tapes...
I'm giving this release of ROAST FISH, COLLIE WEED, AND CORN BREAD five stars because it's Lee Perry's tour-de-force...but the sound quality is just plain lousy. The tracks you hear on the CD come directly from an old vinyl copy of the album which was obviously in less than mint condition. Is this the best we can do for a genius like Scratch? ROAST FISH deserves a lavish re-release like the Congos' first album. Where are the master tapes?!"Roast Fish and Corn Bread" is a great track, but it's the one that everybody and his brother talks about(tantamount to having a discussion about the Rolling Stones and saying, "'(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction' is awesome!"). The real standouts here are the playful "Favourite Dish"(in which Perry repeats the crying-baby effect he first used in the awe-inspiring "People Funny Boy"), the saxaphone-driven "Big Neck Police"(with gorgeous backing vocals by the Full Experience), and--best of all--the paranoid, menacing "Evil Tongues". You can hear the anguish in Perry's gravelly voice as he sings the chorus, and a single withering note from Earl "Chinna" Smith's guitar drones on and on and on. Amazing.

"Service your body" "eat the right food" -Lee Perry
This album is solid, the soundeffects are crazy in a few tracks but overall this is an highly uplifting and spiritual album in entirety.

This Is The Definitive Version
A lot of people are presuming that there is some better version possible of this music. I don't think so. "Apeology" contains a version which goes a little slower and reduces treble and tape hiss. It sounds like CRAP compared to this version. Cleaner, and more like typical reggae, but relatively charmless and ordinary.I presume that Scratch wanted this album to sound like it does here. Pitch mods, arguably high treble, and all. I presume that this is the way he mixed and mastered this to sound. I don't know for sure - I'd be very curious to know what the original Jamaican vinyl sounds like. I assume that it sounds like this, with minor variation. There might have been some flaws in the vinyl they transferred this version from, but I think that most of what people are calling flaws are choices Scratch made in mixing/mastering.Some of the reviewers here are way off point. It's as if they picked up "Revolver" by The Beatles and are telling people "This version of the recording seems to contain pitch changes and even backwards sounds. The Beatles' music deserves better than this. Hold out for a version where these flaws are corrected; it'll probably sound really amazing when that happens".This is indeed the "Revolver" or "Sgt. Peppers" of reggae. It's wild imaginative art; it's a high-water mark. It's the best of Perry's albums and contains some of his best music.

Roast Fish and Corn Bread Seems Like A Fishy Combo But It Works
Lee "Scratch" Perry is one of my favorite reggae artists. The man has put his stamp on so many great records (mostly from a production standpoint). On this album, Lee Perry flexes his vocal stylings over some excellent riddims. While his voice might not be as impressionable as a Bob Marley or a Michael Rose, Lee can definitely throw down. Favorites include "Roast Fish and Corn Bread" which sports a hard hitting bassline along with a droned out bell effect. It's the perfect song for those blessed with a quality sound system. "Soul Fire" is an all-time favorite of mine. The production is classic Perry. Soaring horns, a percussion that sounds like steam out of a kettle, low reverb bass, and Lee Perry pouring his soul into this monster of a song. This is an album that shouldn't be missed when checking for some great reggae music!

Great to hear the sometimes erratic Perry in fine form ...
Great to hear the sometimes erratic Perry in fine form here. This is available as part of a 3 album collection which is better value, if you seek it out, but I can't fault the album otherwise.

Poorly pressed but great music
Please understand that this three star rating is NOT an indictment of the music, which is superb... this is a reflection of the vinyl pressing. My copy (and others from this label) is pressed so off-center that the tracks on side two are nearly unlistenable due to the excessive wow on every rotation. I would stay away from these Jamaican budget releases, although your mileage may vary. I had trouble with The Return of the Super Ape from this same company. Perhaps they have a bad press; maybe they just have quality control issues.

Lee Perry è il Genio Musicale!
Lee Perry è il Genio Musicale! The Great Upsetter ci incanta nel disco "incompreso", forse perchè l'ha cantato tutto lui, regalandoci incredibili versions di classici reggae, forse e molto piu' probabile perchè il genio è sempre stato avanti nei tempi

pur chef d'oeuvre !
