good guide, infuriatingly difficult city to navigate efficiently in
I just got back from spending 7 nights in Venice. While I was there I had the Lonely Planet Venice guide as well as the Rick Steves Venice guide, and truthfully, the whole time while I tried to figure out which book I relied upon most, to make my primary guide, I constantly found unique information in each book. If anything each guide complemented the other. I'd say both were equally good and probably good as a single guide, though, as I always do, I like to have at least 2 guides at each location.

A little too soon
Haven't gotten to Italy yet so can't really evaluate but did notice at least one lacuna. Also annoyed that I can't do a search on the Kindle version and can't zoom maps without downloading PDFs.

Less impressed than usual for a Lonely Planet guide
I normally bang on about how good Lonely Planet guides are however this is the first time I've been disappointed by one. The information does not seem to be as logically presented as normal. An example might be the lion of St. Mark - this is all over Venice and is the symbol of the city, however this doesn't appear in the index or is not mentioned in the San Marco section. I ended up finding Google and the map given to me by the hotel much more useful. Maybe if I had of had time to read the whole of the book I would have found this info but unfortunately I didn't.

Wouldn't leave home without it
Really useful guide. Lots of up to date and relevant info. Particularly good on places to eat and drink. And guides to specialist shops (like handmade paper that I was interested in) were spot on. Also a good pull out map in the back which had more detail on than others we had. Unfortunately I left it in a cafe!

The earlier version was much better
I already has the previous edition, however I bought this for my parents on my most recent trip and wish I hadn't. The older version was so much better, particularly the re walking tours.
