Perfect kit for the money.
I ordered the SOL Origin as a supplement to my bug out bag and could not be happier. It weighs far less than I expected and is about the size of a pack of cigarettes. The knife is sharp, and I had no problems getting the blad to lock. The Fire Striker produces a nice shower of sparks and I was able to start a fire with only that and the included tinder. The snar wire is some pretty strong stuff. The tin foil is also sturdy enough to make it practical as a container for water. The signal mirror is nice and shiny (could double as a fire starter by reflecting sunlight onto some tinder). The compass is dead accurate. As for the twine and fishing kit, I've not gotten around to testing them. As for those having problems with the whistle, you have to cover both of the mouth holes at the back, so yes, it can be a bit tricky. But when you get it, my does this thing hurt your ears! The included survival tips are actually helpful and accurate information. My only gripe with this kit was that the LED light was a little on the weak side. Other than that, I'm happy and this kit now rests in a side pouch in my bug out bag. Thanks SOL!

Not bad
So far I haven't needed to use it but it looks like it would work in a pinch. Plan on testing it out soon. Like how compact it is. The knife in it is kind of a joke but that's just me.

An Emergency Survival Kit for the Masses
If you're a serious outdoorsman, camper, survivalist, or naturist, you're not going to buy this kit anyway. You'll construct your own kit out of best-of-breed equipment. For the normal guy who needs something in an emergency situation, the Origin rocks. I don't understand the sentiment from others that the kit is cheaply constructed. I pounded six tent stakes into the ground with mine. It's made of *very* thick plastic.Yes, if you used the tools in this kit on a routine basis as your primary gear during camping trips, they would not last. They're not meant to. They're meant for emergencies. The knife in this kit is not meant for you to give up your primary field knife ... it's meant to be used if you find yourself without your gear and you otherwise have nothing else to rely on. It also teaches a beginner to focus on the absolute basics necessary for survival.Put this in your car, bugout pack, or minimum carry kit. It's an excellent tool of last resort.

Rubbish
Anyone who spends time outdoors, especially ultra-light campers, can make a kit for 1/2 the cost that is better in every way.Start with a memory stick waterproof storage case CowboyStudio Professional Rubber Sealed, Water Proof Memory Card Case for 4 PCS , take out the rubber insides, and begin to make a slimline case. Mine contains:Wire, fishing line, duct tape, hooks, porta-water treatment pills, aspirin, anti-diarrhea pills, the tiny multi-tool True Utility Scarab Multi Tool , small rope, tin foil, one half of a thermal mylar blanket, a razor blade, matches, birthday candles (2), Nite Ez Small Biners (2) Nite Ize KRG-03-01 S-Biner Key Ring, Black , US Quarters (2), and more. All in a great memory stick case that is 1/2 as thick as this monstrosity, and fully waterproof. Better built, better all the way around.See online videos, put a little thought into it, and you'll have a slim (that's key) EDC carry kit for half this price. The knife in this kit is worthless--so, it's always prudent to carry and EDC knife, anyhow, outside the EDC box.

Grab And Go
I received this item on time, and I couldn't be more disappointed. The knife is ok, I guess, but the light was dead. The compass is barely passable for a dollar compass. The "fire starter" is about a bic. The mirror is ok. The interior cavity is much smaller than I thought it would be. It's contents are cheap and can be pieced together. When you take everything out the volume inside is about the same as a medium prescription bottle. Very small. I was counting on the fact that if all was bad I could use it as a waterproof container for matches etc... I am not sure I trust the O ring on this thing. I will leave it to pros to test it. I like S.O.L. but this is an inferior product. I don't recommend it.

Saved my Life
So my girlfriend and I were in the woods going for a hike, we spot a bear and I remember hearing on Discover channel that if you stand still the bear wont attack you. That was bullshit. The bear started maliciously charging us but luckily with the help of my survival kit I cut my girlfriends leg making her immobile and letting me get away. All I can say is thank you! 10/10
