Feasting on the Word Advent Companion: A Thematic Resource for Preaching and Worship Hardcover – October 24, 2014

I find Feasting on the Word to be a must-have for modern preaching and education. I appreciate that the writers go through categorically to examine the texts theologically, pastorally, exegetically, and homiletically. Thorough and fresh perspectives.

I purchased this to help me through this advent season. I love the fact that it combines worship liturgies along with the Advent texts (Old and New Testaments). Like the other Feasting companions, it offers a well rounded look at the texts.Since I use the Kindle version, I keep it open on my iPad while typing it into my computer. A bit old fashioned, but it works.

Once you have preached throughout the standard Revised Common Lectonary texts for Advent, this helpful resource will guide you through Advent using themeatic texts that speak to the season and provide helpful ideas for exploring Advent with fresh eyes and new perspective. I am looking forward to using it this year, 22 years into my ministry.

Feasting on the Word never disappoints. Already had the lectionary set, so this Advent companion is a huge help and bonus. I plan to use it extensively. I recommend all the Feasting on the Words.

This book has been very frustrating for me to use and I wish I'd not bought it. There is no indication of it serving any particular lectionary year (currently we are in B)--though in all fairness, I don't remember the book advertised as such. I've been able to page through it to find some of the texts but it has been frustrating. Some of the material (the sermon helps in particular) is duplicated in the corresponding Feasting on the Word series or the new Preaching series from Sundays and Seasons, which are both much more user friendly. Generally I'm happy with any kind of reference book I purchase that could possibly kickstart a sermon, even if it sits on my shelf for awhile--not so with this one. This book will never be a go-to for me. The liturgy stuff might spark ideas for some, but using it will require changes for context anyway. All in all, I'm not happy with this reference book; I wish I'd saved my money.
