Best excavated outside, near a hose!
Like the Geoworld Mammoth, this is a well-designed toy for a budding paleontologist. My son (4 years old) was able to excavate, wash (important step, as the bones are encased in a giant chalk block), and assemble the smilodon almost entirely by himself (the head was tricky). The only thing about our model was that the back legs/hip would not stay on (yes, we found the notch). I ended up applying a little bit of rubber cement to it, which solved this problem. The coloring of the fossil is quite similar to the La Brea Tarpits, which adds to the fun.

The product arrived in good shape. HOWEVER
The product arrived in good shape. HOWEVER, the leg of the sabre tooth tiger was not built properly and had to be "carved" to be made to fit which was a bit of a bummer but nothing that a little crazy glue didn't fix but it should have just all worked. IN ADDITION that blue stuff that the "bones" were buried in made a GIGANTIC mess and required a massive clean up. Granted I should have supervised but my daughter got to it before I did luckily I got it handled before mom got home so no harm done. All in all it was a cool product aside from the one leg not fitting right . And the super blue dust mess it was a lot of fun for the kiddo

Fun kit for your young paleontologist
My son loved this kit and the model went together nicely. I did take one star away as it was all dug out in about an hour. I would have liked it to have been harder to dig out like some of the other kit, but he loved it so that is all that matters in the end. Clean up was easy and the model stands nicely.

Easily the best $20 I've ever spent.
I bought this for myself, a young adult, because I love sabertooth tigers and geology and thought it would be fun. Boy, was I right. The lock you dig through is soft natural clay-like stuff that's easier to chisel through than previous kits I've tried out, and is very easy to brush out of the joints and holes. The pieces snapped together easily and were well-cut. The whole figure looks really good when it's done. The mouth opens and closes and the head moves. Really great product!

Nice fossil project
12 year old son loves dinosaurs/fossils. This set was perfect for him to chip away at to discover the sabre tooth. After you remove it from plastered environment, you assemble it into it's skeletal frame to play or display!
