I did not hang on my home, but you could use outdoor command strips

I have mine outdoors and have not seen any bleeding.

What kind of fabric is this? Cotton? Is it soft like cheesecloth or more rough like gauze?

It's closer to cheesecloth than gauze. Loosely woven thread that feels like cotton thread to me. It can be stretched, cut, bunched, etc. Very useful for Halloween props. Definitely not gauze.
