Tough to get setup, but impressive once running.
Once up and running it is quite impressive. Was much harder to install firmware than a Raspberry Pi. The Orange Pi 5 comes in a variety of flavors (Pro, Plus, Max, Ultra) - each has different advantages and limitations. The Pro is generally great but the lack of installed onboard flash by default means no bootloader and consequently getting it fired up requires jumping through some hoops. I don't like it when reviewers de-rate because of a feature or limitation that is clearly communicated up front. In this case I can't say I was misled directly, but even after pouring over the Amazon product description and the manufacturer website I made certain assumptions about it being more of a Raspberry Pi clone than it is. The 600+ page user guide documentation is tough to follow, but did provide a viable pathway to getting it going. I was unable to get balenaEtcher to make a bootable image, but can't say I tried super hard. I punted pretty quickly and the RKDevTool firmware flashing tool worked fine. It is much less intuitive than simply using a Pi imager, but was easy once I manged to get a USB-A / USB-A cable cobbled together to make the connection. The pre-built OS images on the website all worked, but trying to figure out which to use for my application was a chore in and of itself. In the end, its an impressive SBC, but probably not for the faint of heart.

Great for hardware encoding
Great amount of compute for the price! This model is particularly useful since hardware video encoding on this SoC is a breeze!
