Q: Is this compatible with steering wheel controls?

Yes it is. The Blaupunkt San Diego 530 has the SWC (steering wheel control) plug in the back. Just purchase the appropriate controller for your vehicle and be sure to set the HU's internal radio button controls found in the HU settings first then power up/connect the actual controller. The reason why to set the HU buttons first is so when the Metra detects your vehicle (hopefully) you will be done. If you dont set up the radio in settings the Metra will not function at first. That's what happened in MY case. Once I set up the HU's internal controls it worked fine. I used the Metra Axxess ASWC-1 with the Blaupunkt San Diego 530. It functions perfectly. Granted my vehicle (Honda Ridgeline) only has five functions on the steering wheel related to the HU but, they all work just like they did using the factory radio.

Q: How updated is the gps when bought?

You get a free update within 30 days from switching it on the first time. The update is easily installed from your PC onto the SD card. Takes 2 minutes.
