Mathematical Puzzles (AK Peters/CRC Recreational Mathematics Series)

Wow, what a splendid collection of varied and challenging puzzles - a puzzler's delight!I especially liked the "handicap" puzzles - these are new to me, and involve algorithmic puzzles with bizarre handicaps having to do with memory.The book also has extensive refrences so you can further your interests for a particular type of puzzle. There's even an unsolved puzzles section to challenge even the professional mathematician.In terms of difficulty level, I would say that 2/3rds of the puzzles are meant for the seasoned puzzler and do require some "mathematical maturity" . But there are quite a few "insight" puzzles that required almost no math.There's even geography puzzles of all things - that's quite refreshing and original for a math puzzle book.congrats Dr. Winkler on a splendid collection!

The best part of Winkler's books is that he explains the solutions. Bit of a word of warning though, the author is a puzzle maven and a research mathematician. His explanations require some mathematical knowledge and the ability to think in terms of algorithms. The text in the explanations are pleasantly chatty but don't oversimplify.

My brother is quite the mathematician, so I figured he would love this book, and I was right! I was a little nervous the puzzles would be too easy for him, but many of them were quite challenging. A few are not really 'math' puzzles but rather plays on words, but all in all, this is a great book for anyone who wants to exercise their brain.

I wish I wrote this book. It is magnificent, a great collection of all the classical puzzles great at parties (well, some parties).

Some terrific problems here. There are some that even a professional mathematician would be unlikely to solve, but they are all interesting to think about an work on.

I thoroughly enjoyed the puzzles in this book. I received many hours of entertainment, and learned a great deal as well. But, being a layman and not knowing much at all about mathematics, some of the later problems were rather difficult. A few of the problems had writing that was difficult to understand. But overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and definitely recommend it!

Oh auite different from most such books, more quirky and fun.

This book has a collection of very classic mathematical puzzles. It is extremely fun reading for all maths geeks or college or even high school students who are interested in mathematics

Perfecto, unos rompecabezas muy entretenidos y algunos muy difíciles, no cabe duda de que el señor Winkler es un conocedor de rompecabezas y este libro presenta algunos de sus favoritos.

Christmas present for my wife, a retired maths teacher. She loves it and appreciates the challenge.

Tricky problems that require some time to puzzle out, it's definitely worth it ! Should be part of anyone who likes mathematical puzzles.

Even for lifetime mathematicians, this is stretching.Excellent
