substitute for New Balance 1122
I searched the internet for a substitute for New Balance 1122 because the replacement, 1123, is a terrible shoe. My inserts, especially the right insert, would not fit into the New Balance 1123 because the right shoe is narrower than the left shoe. The shoe also ran a 1/2 size larger than the 1122. So after having bought the 1123, I had been looking for a new style with most of the features of the 1122. I found a review suggesting the 857 was similar so I took a chance and purchased the shoe. It is true to size, with a wide toe box.(I wear 6.5 B). Both my inserts fit into the shoe. My foot feels stable in this shoe when I walk. Now the negatives. There is a glued on piece of cardboard on the inside bottom of the shoe. This needed to be removed because it only went up half way to the toe area creating a drop off where it stopped. You may not notice it if you use the New Balance insert that comes with the shoe, however my orthotic has a slight drop at the same area where the soft flexible gel like material goes past the plastic part of my insert. This drop, added to the 1/16 inch thickness of the cardboard, was not comfortable. After removing the inserts and cardboard and replacing them with my inserts, the shoe felt very similar to the 1122. The cardboard was a little difficult to remove but it only took me 30 minutes to do both shoes. Another issue is the difference in the rounding of the sole of the shoe. The 857 is not as rounded as the 1122. This caused me to stub my midfoot area for the first 30 minutes of wearing. After that time I adjusted my walking pattern but I do think that I prefer the more rounded sole because it made it easier to walk. Also the 857 has different lacing but I was able to lace them similar to the 1122 and found them comfortable. So considering that these were the only negatives and difference, this is a good alternate choice for those people, who like myself, did not like the replacement 1123. This shoe is also less expensive than the 1123.

Not the "real thing"? ? ?
I am quite disappointed in this shoe. I have worn New Balance shoes for at least 20 years, and have bought the W587 Running shoe ever since I first discovered this style, a number of years ago. I've had probably at least 15 pairs over the years. BUT! ! ! I have always gotten them from either a recognized sports shoe store or ordered directly from New Balance. I recently ordered a pair from Amazon, as I couldn't find this style in my size anywhere, and the store I usually got them from told me NB was discontinuing it. So I was thrilled to find them here. So glad I didn't order more than one pair as I was tempted to do! Either these are 'knock-offs' or seconds. They are not the quality I am used to! First and foremost, while the size itself seems to fit right, the toe box seems to be smaller, and has sharp or rough edges inside the upper side of it that are very irritating to the top and sides of the foot. I have never EVER had this problem before! They are also much stiffer than those I've had in the past. I am a 70+ year old woman, and no, I don't run. But this shoe has always (in the past) given me the support I need. I could stay on my feet all day in them. After walking for just a couple of hours, I HAD to get these shoes off! This was last Tuesday, and my right foot, especially, still has a very sore and irritated spot on the outside of my little toe.I don't want to believe that New Balance has lowered their quality and reliability that much, so I will be looking for another style that will suit me as much as this one always did. And I will be durned sure to buy ONLY from a recognized sports shoe store, or order directly from New Balance!

New Balance 587
This is the sixth or seventh pair of NB587's I have bought. I love them. Several years ago I was in an auto accident which crushed my left ankle. I have problems with supination (foot tilts to the outside) and swelling. The SL2 last in this shoe makes it roomy enough to hold my custom orthotic and the swelling of my ankle. I like the fact that it's all man made materials (vegan). The top is fabric so it has good air circulation. The wide bottom provides motion control to help keep my ankle straight. My only issues with this shoe is the "abzorb" that the sole is made of. It gives the shoe great cushion but it's hard to keep clean. There is also a groove along the heal of the shoe on the bottom. Sometimes the abzorb material starts to crumble there. I have helped solve this by spraying Scotchgard's water repellent for outdoor fabrics along that groove. Makes the shoe last much longer.(I don't think Scotchgard makes their brand of water repellent anymore but I suspect any brand of tent and fabric water proofer from you local sporting goods store will do the trick)

Just Average
After reading a plethora of reviews on various New Balance shoes, I ordered these New Balance W587 running shoes from Amazon based on the recommendation that they were for over pronation problems and supposedly very supportive. Although not a runner in any sense of the word, I have been wearing the NB1122 for many years as these have been really good shoes for SEVERE over pronation which I have due to having severe rheumatoid arthritis. I have had surgery to attempt to correct one foot and have 6 screws in my foot to hold it in place, so it is extremely important that I have a well fitting supportive shoe to wear most every day. These new shoes did not compare with my worn out NB1122's in the way of adequate support. I wear a B width, which I ordered in this shoe although my feet are on the narrow side. The B width has always fit very well. These shoes were wider than the NB1122 I was used to and slipped up and down on my heels. This along with the lack of good support was the reason I returned them for the new upgraded model of the NB1122...the NB1540. Yes, they are much more expensive but well worth the price. They are very comfortable and offer the support I need. The W587 would probably work well for those with no foot problems and maybe minor over pronation.

Wide fittings, deep cushioning
Its difficult for me to find wide enough trainers. I already own a paid of New Balance wide trainers so I thought it was worth trying a different style. Felt lovely, wide enough and plenty of cushion underfoot but didn't keep them because the sides were high and immediately rubbed my ankle bone. Obviously I have shallow feet!
