Q: My sponge has some black spots. I asked my band director and he said it was carbon. Is it mold or carbon?

it is mold, use Listerine Original instead of water on sponge, problem goes away. avoid flavored Listerine. You may have to replace sponge if mold doesn't come out after washing, then rewetting with listerine.

Q: Should i change the sponge after a period? like when i use it for one month, should i change it?

Probably not necessary. I clean my sponge with a little vinegar and water. Sort of rinse it out and let it dry, then re-wet it. It holds up nicely and does the job of keeping the reed playable.

Q: Will this hold contra bass clarinet reeds?

I use mine for tenor sax reeds. Works fine for that.
