Deutschland '86 [DVD]

A Must-See
The titles use Peter Schilling's Major Tom, a 1983 European hit single; the English version. This second tranche offers new ventures for story telling and increasing diversity. It begins with Martin's awakening in Angola, as a member of the East German security services. Now in a like-minded Communist country. Deutschland 86 is a tale of the bizarre, the real, and the continued assemblage of story and character. The first box set Deutschland 83 is marvellous. This follow-up cuts across continents and tells a tale written by spiders. Tales about spies, spying and illegal arms sales in 1986 South Africa. There is a wonderful small Angolan boy who speaks fluent German, boys need father-figures it seems. The CIA and the East German security networks are certainly entertaining in this ironic series of 461 minutes of features. The conflict between Communism and Capitalism hides behind the story and appears in comic moments. The story contains a mixture of tension, excitement, personal affairs and search for security. Wonderfully viewable.

Deutschland '86 Uberalles...
Absolutely superb Cold War drama which is every bit as good as the first series - the excellent Deutschland '83. The acting is first-rate, and the era's zeitgeist is palpable. A very convincing depiction of the times and the ludicrous political situation we had to endure. The whole East versus West scenario now seems utterly preposterous. I suppose that in some ways it's no more preposterous than the current Trump versus Putin "puppet show"... the more things change the more they stay the same. And who says that the Germans have no sense of humour; there's a scene involving a "dinner for one" and the American TV series "Love Boat" that is comedy gold. And there's a scene involving slow-motion and lots of guns that's worthy of Quentin Tarantino... Deutschland '89? That'll be very interesting... big changes are on the way, and hard currency won't save the GDR...

first-rate production -- but big failure by manufacturer
A continuation of Deutschland 83, and almost as good. Great acting, beautiful photography and design. Good story and writing. But, for some reason, there is no blu-ray edition with English subtitles, which is a shame because it would be so beautiful in high-definition. Had to take off a star for the failure.

Superb.
Incredibly good. Story line, acting and production values all knit together to create an absorbing and captivating TV series. Easily as good as the first part of this German made action and psychological drama.Eagerly looking forward to the third (and final?) installment.

I wish it could have gone on longer.
An excellent successor series to 'Deutschland 83'. It kept me firmly gripped from start to finish. I was very sorry when I'd finished watching. How I wish they would make it a trilogy and do a final series 'Deutschland 89'.
