The rubber coating turned into a sticky goo after 3 years of use
This device had a nice non-slip very thin rubber coating. After 3 years of use however this coating turned into a sticky goo. I am not sure what caused it. U did not have it submerged in any corrosive liquids etc. I had to use a 99% rubbing alcohol to try to wash it off. It came off OK, but at the bottom where the rubber was still sort of intact it was hard/ not possible to wash it off with the alcohol.Overall I am happy with this device though.

Electronics work great, construction not sturdy
I purchased this for my husband. He was given a first one in 2006 and loved it. He's not a watch wearer so the latch for his belt loop suited him. He's slightly electronically challenged so the clear instructions on how to use made figuring out how to set and use the piece was helpful. The only thing I am hesitant about recommending is the sturdiness of the pin attachment of the time piece to the latch piece. It can't be fixed and that's why I had to buy a second piece.

Alti Tech works like I expected
The Highgear AltiTech has worked very well for me on the several hikes I've been on since I bought it. I was looking mostly for a multi-purpose item to attach to my belt to keep time and whatever other functions I could find for hiking. The AltiTech fills the gap. The altimeter does need to be calibrated occasionally for barometric changes but it has been close enough to give me a good idea of my elevation.

Really liked the watch but flimsy construction
I've used this watch on trips all over the Sierra and even got to the point where I'd wear it to work. Unfortunately the joint between the clip and the watch itself is prone to breaking, I've had two fail in the exact same way.

good all-around tool
I bought this device to replace a Suunto pendulum altimeter that was too fussy to use and burned rapidly through batteries. I bought the Suunto to replace a High-Gear altimeter wristwatch when its alarm mysteriously began to fail.Generally this is a very good tool - I like its altimeter's accuracy and it is easy enough to navigate through the menus. One thing missing from this device that I really liked on the High Gear wristwatch is a lap function in the stopwatch.Do not fool yourself- this is a low-cost electronic device. You shouldn't expect it to have the weight and dependability of a high-end device. That said, I believe it is solidly built for its price range.Good features: the carabiner works well for mountaineering. It's a more intelligent design to clip this device to your backpack than to bury it under several layers on your wrist. The readout is aligned properly for use with the carabiner. The control buttons are large enough to use without taking off your (thinner) gloves. The watch folds into an upright position for tabletop use.

Great product.
I love this thing. I take it with me whenever I am in the back country. It is waterproof so you don't have to worry about it being out in the weather.

Need a 4.5 Star Rating
4.5 stars would be perfect. I've owned this thing for years. At least 6 or 7 years now, and I use it pretty regularly. It lives on my backpacks, and takes a regular beating. I think I've replaced the batteries four times in that entire time. The compass is pretty impressive, and it picks up its bearings quickly when held straight and level. You're supposed to calibrate it every now and then, which I did. Once. When I opened the package it came in. It matches with my magnetic compass every time I've had them together. The altimeter is where the half star comes off. In fairness, I do not do my part and calibrate. Ever. And it is always within two or three hundred feet of accurate. It moves around quite a bit, and does need to be straight and level to get its true reading. It's a nice feature to have, but takes work to keep it right on the money. The thermometer is pretty awesome. As always, you can't have it against your body, or in direct sunlight. But if used correctly, it's pretty impressive how accurate it is.I rarely use it for anything, but the barometer is also pretty accurate. The nifty little upcoming weather feature is cool, and it works, although I never really use it for anything. But it shows sun when it's sunny, and rain when it's raining. There are other features, like the stopwatch, alarm, carabiner, and how it folds to stand alone when you want it to. All of them work well and are functional. It's overall toughness and durability is why I went with five stars instead of four. I am very impressed with how long this thing has lasted being treated the way that it gets treated. I wouldn't die without this tool on my pack, but if it broke, I would not be hesitating to buy one to replace it. Good work, Highgear.
