This review is for readers and parents alike.
Let me start my review for parents. I want to start by saying in high school i discovered this book by taking an sat/act improvement class and every friday we got to read this book. Not saying it is solely from this book but i now go to college for about 800 per semester out of my pocket. This brings me to any potential readers who are reading simply to read the book! I never finished the book in the class i took and years later found the book on amazon and remembering that i actually liked it i bought amd and finished reading it several minutes ago. If you like mystery you will love this book. I blught it after i had already taken act/sat. The fact that it helps those scores is irrelevant to me amd i still highly suggest this book that you will not want to put down. I was dissapointed when i couldnt find more works from this author.

Great vocab tool!
As an English tutor for the SAT, I find this book to be a great addition to my students' preparation for the exam. With definitions at the bottom of each page, students can read the story, try to determine the bolded SAT word by way of context clues, and then simply check if they are correct without having to thumb to the back of the book for a glossary of definitions. A must for high school students who are prepping for the standardized exams!

Great book!
Excellent book for kids to be exposed to higher vocabulary (even if they ARE changing the SAT so as not to include so many obscure words). My middle schoolers actually like reading it because it is a mystery and it has high vocabulary words bolded and listed separately in the back with definitions.

content fine, but book fell apart
This was exactly what I expected it to be. I was looking forward to passing it on to others who would be studying for the SAT as an enjoyable way to study, which it is. However, the binding on the softcover book gave way before I even finished the book. Now I have a bunch of loose pages--very disappointing. I am always very careful with my books, so rough handling was not the cause.

An alternative that students have enjoyred.
I work in the exam prep business and have found that vocabulary work is some of the most important yet uninspiring work we do. Students always pick reading a book over flashcards, word lists, or any other strategy we come up with. I like that the words are defined at the bottom of the page and they are bolded in the text.

Really not that bad.
To improve SAT vocabulary, a student should know words in context. This quick read puts words right into the story. It makes it more interesting than just doing flashcards.
