Quilting for Dummies
My introduction to quilting was abrupt and swift. I had the need of information quickly and found that the Beginning of the first chapter was exactly what I needed to get my thoughts in order. Presented with 8 inch squares with quirky pictures glued on to them that I was to put together in a form that would hang from a wall was a challenge. I was most thankful to have the book - 'Quilting for Dummies' to provide me with clear guidelines to follow. The quilt/hanging was successful and I am now looking forward to progressing to a project that I can plan from the beginning.

Perhaps I am too "dummy" even for this book
I did not want to be unfair to the author and lower the rating because of my own ability to 'get it'. I read the book all the way through and Ms. Fall is a very entertaining writer and the book has much information that probably will be useful to me once I get the hang of it and I get my first quilt made. Right now I am a complete novice. I have never even attempted to make a quilt...never cut out a square let alone any of the other shapes in some of the remarkable quilts you see pictures of. I do own a sewing machine and I did sew quite a bit when my children were younger so it's not that I am unfamiliar with sewing machines and patterns. I myself just need very detailed, graphic instructions and something more basic (read simple) to start. I do not feel after reading this book that I have the information I need to just get right in there and make a quilt. I did happen to find basic quilt instructions...quilting 101...on line at something called 'instructables'. Perhaps if there are others in the same pre beginning stages as I am that would be helpful to you also.

So Convenient
l really needed this book. I have just started trying to quilt and so much I do not know. It really is helpful in giving you the basics and tips. Also I got it second hand so saved money and the book is really in perfect shape. I received it quickly so I got a great deal. So far it has pretty much what I need to get started right.

A decent reference, could be better
I bought this book because I knew absolutely nothing about quilting, I wanted to try it, and I've found that the "for dummies" books don't actually talk down to you. This book is a decent reference for beginners. There is good information on both hand- and machine-quilting, but it is just the basics. I was not overly thrilled with any of the projects, but then I like more modern styles. The projects in this book are very traditional. The best part about this book are chapters 2 & 3, which go over different tools & materials. There is a breakdown of varieties of thread, fabric and batting along with the recommended uses. What is lacking is any kind of planning tools. I was hoping for a method to calculate yardage, but instead the author refers us to different types of quilt design software that will do this for us. That's all fine and good for someone who quilts a lot, but a beginner (usually the intended audience for this book series) is unlikely to shell out $50-$100 for a computer program immediately. I learned quite a bit from this book, but I wouldn't recommend it for someone who already knows how to quilt.

Quilting newbie
I have just recently - last 3 mos, started first quilting project. I have received much advice from "experts". I have since, purchased "Quilting For Dummies". What an eye-opener!! Many questions Cheryl has answered clearly, have helped me tremendously... and there were things the 'experts' told me to do were wrong... and I'm thrilled I learned early on!! Thx, Cheryl, for your wonderful book! I'll be using it often! Even when I become an 'expert' ... to avoid telling others wrong advice... like the importance of cutting fabric, NOT ripping it. (: Now I no longer have fabric on project that won't match up due to distortion with ripping!

Quilting for Dummies - Best instructions ever!
This is the best book for anyone wanting to start quilting from scratch. Author uses clear, easy to understand language combined with detailed pictures and even injects lots of humour to help you remember how and what to do (or what not to do)to avoid mistakes. She tells you what tools you definately need to get started and what you can make yourself or choose to buy later as your confidence and ability improve. Also which fabrics are best for beginners and which to use to get the best results. If you follow this book you will be quilting with confidence in no time. Well done Cheryl - you are a natural teacher and a great inspiration.

Good for expert information
I like to read manuals cover to cover to get all the info before I continue with a craft. So far this book has been a wealth of information & really easy to follow the information. There are lots of books out there on this subject, but I'm learning so I needed something for beginners.

A bit more used than expected
The book in itself is a good guide and very understandable. The only problem I have is that the borders on the pages are very yellow, I think it has been on a shelf unprotected for a very long time there is also a very large crease on the front cover that will need to be reinforced to prevent it from breaking off.

Pleased with purchase!
I was a self-taught quilter and wanted a reference guide to make sure I was doing things properly. Very pleased with this book. I do wish there had been a little more on which machine needles to choose, but I can always get assistance with that at my quilting store. Will keep this book close by when I'm quilting.
