Silent Night [DVD] (2002)

This is a very nice movie about finding peace at Christmas time.. Good story line and cast 🙂

A teacher whose eldest son is dead and husband is missing tries to save her remaining 12 year old son Fritz from conscription during the last few months of WW2. Taking refuge in the family log cabin in the woods dangerously close to enemy lines, both German and American soldiers stumble across their hide out and end up staying the night together. At first the evening is full of hatred and tension but gradually through a roller coaster of emotions mutual respect is found.The film is simply a made for TV film by Canadian TV staring Linda Hamilton (of Terminator fame) but don't let that put you off. It is brilliantly acted and will leave you feel uplifted.

This was a lovely film. No really big name actors to distract with previous roles but a genuinely engrossing story of real charm. It takes place over one night during the Battle of the Bulge as soldiers from both sides seek shelter from the weather in the same cabin where a strong minded woman enforces a truce and they all realise the true meaning of Christmas.The film was recommended to me and I can thoroughly endorse the recommendation. If you are tired of the usual diet of saccharine and plastic dished up at Christmas give this a try.

I like films set in the war and was keen to see this after reading other reviews. I was doubtful as being a 'true story' sometimes they don't work. I found the actors convincing even an aged Linda Hamilton speaking German was clear enough with her young son whom they spend Christmas in a hut with a war around them during ww2. Then a group of 3 Americans turn up, one injured, who seek shelter and then 3 Germans turn up looking for shelter also. Naturally this should have not worked; since being enemies they should have shot each other's brains out or the Germans by right could have arrested the Americans and 'Elizabeth' and her son for sheltering them. It is a nice film that it is set around Christmas, hence the title, Silent Night so the soldiers put their anger issues aside and make peace with Elizabeth and her son who is quite curious about them. The German commandant is quite suspicious and eventually cracks venting his anger towards everyone but then towards the end the group go their own way. I like how there were no real swear words in this, as in most American war films they like to swear a lot, showing how tough they are. You can sort of relate to the actors who I really don't know who they are, despite being familiar with Linda Hamilton (Dantes' Peak). It's a nice war film with a nice setting, being a low budge film it seems to work well.

An excellent WW2 film, at the time of the last few months of the war. I believe the story was a true one, but makes for gripping viewing, with an excellent plot. I have not yet been able to view the DVD owing to my hi-fi not being properly in place, but I look forward to seeing this wonderful film again in the near future.

Excellent World War 2 drama.A german woman and her son ,to escape hostilities ,travel to their woodland lodge at christmas time.A short time later American soldiers arrive ,one wounded ,they ask to stay and she is obliged to let them.But after that some German soldiers turn up looking for shelter and although both sides are very hostile ,she manages to get them to spend christmas day together in peace,which in turn leads to some surprising results.The acting is very good and i was totally absorbed by the story,well worth buying.

This was a good product but not what I thought it would be

Brilliant story of a German Mother taking her 12 year old son into hiding at their hunting lodge in the forest, only to be greeted by 3 American soldiers 1 of whom is injured and then to be intruded upon by 3 German soldiers (one of whom is only 14 years old). The story unfolds on Christmas Eve with hidden traumas unfolding and coming to an understanding with each other, enchanting.

Excellent movie, very meaningful

Watch it pretty much every December

I saw this Hallmark film on cable TV last week and was amazed by the captivating performances, not only by Linda Hamilton, but all the other actors, as well. I used to think of Linda Hamilton as a mid-stream actress, (Terminator), but I was surprised to find that she displayed incredible talent in this World War II story of a band of American and German soldiers destined to spend an evening together in her cottage. This truly is a Christmas classic and is highly emotion-charged, inspiring thoughts of what the true meaning of "loving thy brother" is. I cannot recommend this film enough, and I am more than pleased to see it available on Amazon.com. This movie transcends the typical Christmas fare of snowmen, Santa and jolly elves. It is a MUST SEE!

Excellent movie.....made me realize even the enemies can lay down their weapons for the sake of Christmas

I would like to first thank all who write reviews. I probably would never have bought this movie had I not read the reviews, what a disappointment that would have been. This movie is hard to express into words how emotionally wrapped up you become. It is a strong expression of belief and honor and how persons whom have been raised or trained to belief such differences can come to respect one another and share a most memorable night together. This movie was awesome and you won't be disappointed. This is the kind of movie I welcome into my home.
