Is a measure of happiness even possible when suffering under extreme oppression?
I first came across this book in the bookstore at the Washington DC Holocaust Museum. I was curious and purchased it then. I found it to be very interesting and so did some friends who borrowed it. The price here on Amazon was such a good price I bought another for myself and let my friends keep the first copy. This book is a fascinating study showing how one specific group among all the various diverse groups in the Nazi Concentration Camps were able to maintain a measure of solidarity and happiness while others splintered. The book is unique in that the essays found in it were not written by Jehovah's Witnesses. The book is full of interviews of non-Jehovah's Witness survivors about their observances concerning the behavior of Jehovah's Witnesses.A word of caution for the reader. Some of the experiences are very graphic. When Jehovah's Witnesses have mentioned in their literature some of the shocking experiences their members endured, they often toned down or omitted the worst parts.Another unique aspect of the book is that it is the only place I've ever seen any evidence put forward about concentration camps designed just for children. This is not a book for the faint of heart.

To find out what a true "hero" is, read this book
Many American, British, Canadian and other allied forces died at the hands of their Catholic and Protestant "brothers", but none were killed by any Witness of Jehovah. Instead, they allowed themselves to be executed for their refusal to kill others of any other religion. Some of the contributors to this book try to explain why this was so. Since the end of WW2, the inhuman treatment of fellow humans has been repeated again and again. Reading this book helps one to see what Jesus meant when he said that a rotten tree cannot produce good fruit.

Well documented.!!!
While I have only been able to scan this book so far due to a temporary visual problem, I'm impressed by the documentation used in each essay to show the sources. Considerable research went into the development of this book, and the authors and editor are to be commended for their work.I'm proud to be called one of Jehovah's Witnesses and admire the integrity shown by my brothers and sisters who endured these trials.

Wonderful historical account of what Jehovah's Witnesses went through and wonderful example they set despite extreme persecution from Nazis! To think all they had to do was denounce their religion and they would be free - simply amazing!!

but a serious examination of a terrible injustice.
Detailed accounts of life in concentration camps, with references checked in depth from hundreds of sources. A compilationfrom many contributing authors. Not a 'light' reading book, but a serious examination of a terrible injustice.

Interesting history
This book is expertly written. It tells the experiences of Jehovah's Witnesses in the period of 1933 - 1945 and with some information about persecution within the DDR post war.It has many pictures of individuals and documents about this period. And it really shows that a group of people were persecuted not because of race but because they were willing to endure and die for a faith that was strong enough for them to endure whatever occurred. The book draws on records and personal letters of experiences. If you want to know about why Jehovah's Witnesses suffered and continue to experience persecution, then read this book.
