Kotobuki Japanese Rice Washer with Dual Drain, Clear

This is a colander-style rice washing bowl. It's thinner plastic than a colander, because rice is light weight and all you are doing is running water through it and scrubbing the rice a bit. This removes the glucose and starch coating that is put on rice to improve its appearance and keep it from sticking in the bag during storage. Rice used to be coated with talc, a carcinogen due to asbestos in the talc mineral, but this practice has been stopped, for the most part, except in some South American markets. However, washing the rice still removes any dirt and coating and ensures the rice boils up properly.So this sieve or colander is used specifically for that purpose. You can use it as a colander, but it's not really meant for hot water (draining pasta) or rough use, so other than occasionally washing some vegetables in it, I use it exclusively for rice. There are holes in the bottom, but fine enough mesh to keep the rice from falling out, and there are slits on the side to allow you to swirl the water and drain it from sides while you rinse. It works well.There is a red eyelet on the handle tab to allow you to hang it on a pegboard, if that's your style of storage.

Large, sturdy, nice handle, very easy to use for rinsing off rice or other foodss, easy to wash after.

Sure beats swishing rice around in the rice cooker pot and pour out the starch water. Yes, it good and worth it,.

When you are working with rice or small grains like quinoa, rinsing is sometimes a challenge. This rice bowl is very easy to wash and rinse and directly transfer to your rice cooker or pan.Very easy to clean, just swish with a dish rag, rinse, and let dry. I have not tried using the dishwasher, so I am not sure if it will survive a hot wash.A very good addition to kitchen gadgets.

I purchased this to avoid wearing the coating off my Zojirushi rice cooker bowlIt does a nice job of facilitating thorough washing of rice, and I am happy I purchased it, but it is not absolutely necessary to clean rice.That said, it is well-designed and effective.

I can't say a whole lot about this item. It's basically a strainer but is made especially for prewashing the starch off the rice. It works. The rice does not fall through the holes, and the strainer is slow to drain to allow more time for contact with the water. The strainer system built into the spout is nice as it drains even more water off. I'm sure I'll find other uses for this strainer than just rice. It is pretty solid for plastic, and I expect it will last a long time with normal handling. I'm glad I bought it as washing the starch off is important to my diabetic diet.
