Best for starting a collection.
So I am 34 married and have three children and had not bought a deck of Magic cards in over a decade. Xbox live was running a promotion of free games for Gold members and I ended up downloading the arcade game of Magic they were offering on a whim. With a new obsession in tow I am now the proud owner of 2014 deck builder's toolkit whilst trying to convince myself it was for me and my children's enjoyment. While my children may reap the benefit of my new hobby and my wife has throughly enjoyed teasing me I am very pleased with this purchase and is perfect for re-entering the world of Magic. That being said I agree with the other reviews in that this is best for starting or restarting a collection (My original collection I lent to my sister never to be seen again. The cards not my sister). I received everything as describe and the box was new, well packaged, and unopened. I was not as lucky as other reviewers and did not receive any cards greater then five dollars though largely a mute point for me as I had no intention of reselling my cards anyways. Though I did not acquire any of the hugely expensive cards I did get a nice variety of cards with very few duplicates. I also agree with other reviewers in that a core starter deck needs to be purchased in addition to the deck builder kit which I bought three core decks to compliment the kit. I don't know if this is the case with all deck builder kits but mine was (not including the three extra decks I bought) green and blue magic heavy with black in the middle and white and mountain being the least. There was also a heavy amount of instants and sorcery cards, moderate amount of enchantments, and out of everything I bought very few artifacts; five in total. I ended up with six foil cards all together but I think three of the them came from the deck builders kit. Also as stated in other reviews the packs were a mix of 2013, 2014, and Ravinica. So if a purchaser quickly glances at the box only and assumes these cards are all core 2014 they would be wrong, but the fact that they are mixed is mentioned in the description and on the box so its not a total surprise. Overall I feel I have a great start to a renewed obsession in life and the deck builder's tool kit is a good compliment to buying the core decks. In fact I enjoyed, ahem, I mean my children enjoyed all the new cards so much that I ended up having to buy a fat pack as well, but that has not arrived at the time of writing this review.

Exactly What I Expected
The price for this was great, only 16.99, and you get 285 cards (including 100 basic lands, several colorless lands, and 4 random lands). Although it does not contain 2014 cards exclusively, you still get a large amount of them as well as other recent expansions. Some people may have a problem with this if they are trying to build a 2014 deck, but personally I prefer the variety. You are not likely to get many duplicate cards. I have maybe 8.The only downside I have so far found is that the box these cards come in is not ideal for storing them once you have opened up all of the plastic wrapped packages. If not for that, I would have given it 5 stars, but it is truly only a minor issue. So, just a tip, if you don't have any way to store your cards yet, you may want to purchase some sort of case, because you will be annoyed with trying to keep them organized in what is essentially a small shoebox. The box itself does look nice though, and is also fairly solid, so it will do for a short term storage solution.I would highly recommend this to someone who is starting their Magic collection, especially since you are going to need at least 20 lands of each color in order to build even the most modest deck, which is what this contains. In order to build a deck of at least 60 cards though, you will probably need to combine colors in order to have the appropriate ratio of lands in the deck.Overall, A great purchase for people looking to get into Magic.

Standard fare
My boy wanted me to get into Magic with him, so I decided to get a leg up and get the Deck Builder's Toolkit. It is exactly what is advertised. A whole bunch of cards, enough land to support your choice of build, some decent cards and not too many duplicates. Instructions are included which is good for beginners (like me) and strategy hints help more experienced players (like my son). It's a fun way to get a better deck without buying lots of booster packs, but nothing spectacular about it.

Really nice for the price.
I bought from MTGBiz.The product is very good for the price. It includes a bunch of cards and 4 boosters. Just the boosters separately cost about 12 bucks. The kit was about 17 when I bought. So, it is definitely good. I bought a kit for me and another for a gift. One had boosters from Return to Ravnica, Gatecrash, Magic 2013 and Magic 2014. The other had a Dragon's Maze one instead of Magic 2013.There are few lands (20 of each type) in a kit if you want to make a mono-color deck, but they are plenty if you plan on running two or more colors.I think the product is great for someone who has learned to play Magic and wants to start to play better. However I would not recommend for a total new player, because it would be easier to learn the mechanics of the game with a pre-constructed deck. When he/she has learned, then he/she can jump into the strategy of making decks. So, for someone who has learned to play but has no collection it's a good way to start. For a total new player, I think it would be better a pre-constructed deck.
