Mrs. Noodlekugel

A for style, F for content
I saw the whimsical illustration and the promise of humor and thought this might be a story for my kids. Mr Pinkwater's tone is as lighthearted and the characters as quirky as promised, but......as another reviewer mentioned, the story is rather thin. It's more of a set-up for the series than a story in itself, lacking, in my opinion, a satisfying dénouement. Moreover, I don't appreciate a family in which the parents expect so little obedience that they forbid the children to do a good thing with, I suppose, the intention that they do the forbidden thing as opposed to something worse. That models all sorts of wrong behavior to which I'd only be willing to expose my kids if there was an important story behind it.I'd recommend this books to parents who like to entertain their children with light and quirky humor and don't mind disobedience portrayed as routine, expected behavior.

FUN!
FUN! This is classic Daniel Pinkwater with characters stating the obvious in a wry tone, absurd happenings interspersed with everyday activities, and a wild sense of fun!The text is accessible for those on the cusp of attempting chapter books. It is also much more appealing than typical books at this reading level. I don't know if he intended this but, Pinkwater has managed to craft this story in a manner that is gender neutral. As a classroom teacher, this is something I value. Many books aimed at this audience are clearly targeted for a specific gender which limits its usefulness. The illustrations remind me of Chris Van Duesen's work in The Circus Ship as well as the Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle and Mrs. Pickerell Miss Pickerell Goes to Mars of my childhood.

Meh.
Meh. My 4-year-old seems to like this book, but I'm not a fan. As other reviewers pointed out, the premise begins with children climbing on top of a dresser and then deliberately disobeying their parents. Of course everything is OK in the end and there's magic at Mrs. Noodlekugel's place, the balm for all poorly constructed narratives. The text is a bit stiff for a read-aloud book. I think my 4-year-old and I both preferred the Magic Tree House and Geronimo Stilton books to this.

Shades of Mrs. Piggle Wiggle
Mrs. Noodlekugel lives in a cute little house in the middle of the city surrounded by skyscrapers and is quite delighted to make the acquaintance of two children who are drawn to her house. She is a good cook, and has three blind mice as friends. Although there isn't a strong story line, this is a very cute book to read aloud to the under 6 crowd. Just the right length!

Engaging Mrs. Noodlekugel!
The plot is different from most aimed at this age group, and is quite engaging. Illustrations a bit too cartoonish for my taste.
