KOHLERGENUINE PART 1080961 CANISTER VALVE ASSEMBLY KIT

Did you know Kohler likes to make their parts just a bit different size than most toilet manufactures? I didn't until a recent leaking issue arose that even damaged some drywall down below and left some mildew spots on our rug below. About 1 1/2 years ago our flush valve acted up I measured a bit and headed off the the big orange box store to find a replacement. I purchased a fluid master 3" universal flush valve and a tank to bowl gasket for 3" toilets also fluid master. Well move forward 1 1/2 years and one late Friday night my wife texts me, come upstairs we have a problem in the MB. Water, lots of it. We cleaned that up and just for grins I went downstairs to see if we got lucky. Nope a small hole in the drywall ceiling with water dripping down and the carpet below discolored. Apparently we had a small slow leak that we did not detect until it manifested itself into a faster leak. Ugh. I shut the water off to the toilet, drained the tank and addressed the issue the next day. Turns out we had 3 issues; Toilet bowl to floor gasket (wax ring), flush valve that was a bit to small (Kohler is 3.25" not 3" like most other toilet manufactures) the flush valve somehow moved a bit to allow a slow water seepage through. Also the tank to bowl gasket I bought 1 1/2 years ago was for 3" toilets not the 3.25" that Kohler is. Combine all 3 issues and that accounted for my wife's come upstairs we have a problem text message. I researched the issues, I wish Kohler marked their tanks and bowls with easy to find model numbers, rather than search through a photo data base, ugh!! Well that's how I discovered Kohler is 3.25" not 3" and realized that fluid master should have said on their packaging may NOT work with Kohler toilets. So I ended up calling Kohler to find my model number as the cryptic numbers on the bowl and tank gave me nothing. I got my answers and found this flush valve on Amazon, no stock at stores in town of course. I ordered the valve, estimated arrival was 8 days out, well I actually got it in 2 days, yea, something positive for a change. And the valve came with a new Kohler tank to bowl gasket, sweet. Installation was quick and easy and clearly it was the right, larger part, as the gaskets covered the tank hole with over 1/2" to spare on all sides. The fluid master covered it but with very little clearance which lead to the slow leak. So I put every thing back together including a new hybrid rubber and wax gasket. Turned the water back on and so far 3+ weeks later NO leakage. It looks like the problem is solved. I can repair the drywall hole now, yea. Moral of the story if you have Kohler toilets USE ONLY KOHLER parts!!

When the product arrived, it was exactly like the one I was replacing, therefore it was an easy install and worked as intended. Although I installed this months ago, I've had no issues with it.

This part works well, but it’s a ripoff because the design of the original broken piece that I had to replace is faulty. The top of the toilet tank hits the plastic piece at the very top of the valve (where the fill hose connects into it with a clip) and so that black plastic piece breaks off the top of the canister assembly. You cannot purchase only the broken piece of plastic. You have to purchase the entire canister assembly—lots of parts that you have to pay for, but don’t need. I thought it would be better to go ahead and replace the entire canister assembly anyway since I now have all the new parts—but when read the instructions for installing the canister assembly, I was really bummed, because you have to remove the entire toilet tank. They must be kidding. Instead, I decided to replace only the part actually broken. I simply twisted off the center column (with the broken piece) by turning it a 1/4 turn counterclockwise, removed it and used (only) that part of the entire new assembly. This was quick and easy (thankfully), but Koehler should sell that one part that breaks, so that you don’t have to purchase the entire canister valve assembly. Also, the new canister assembly that I received is not exactly as shown in the picture—it’s a better design. It does not have that fragile plastic “cup shaped” piece at the top—the plastic piece that the flexible hose clips into and breaks when the tank top hits it. Instead, the top of the replacement assembly that I received has a very small and simple nozzle, over which I shoved the plastic hose. Because the new one is not made with that fragile cup-shaped plastic top, it sits lower down inside the toilet tank and the toilet tank lid no longer hits it. I am really glad that Koehler improved the design this way, but still they should sell a replacement for only the old fragile part that breaks so that we don’t have to pay for the entire assembly.Glad to have my toilet flushing again.If my review was helpful, please let Amazon know by clicking “helpful”. Installed and leak is no more! You might have to hack of the existing hex nut on your flush valve to remove and install new one.
