Have been using this yellow lanky ceramic sharpener, and have trouble removing the build up of fines... any specific techniques for cleaning & maintai

use oil(wd40) to remove build up from ceramic stones and water to remove build up on diamond stones

Can this be used without the lansky system? And exactly how sharp does this get it?

It is pretty small (narrow) and is designed to be used with their guide rods and blade holder. I suppose you could use it as a flat stone, although you may be better off seeking a stone designed for such use.As far as "how sharp does it get it?", that all depends on your skill and persistence. This ultra-fine stone is used for final polish of an existing sharpened blade, and it does well at that. The next finer stone in the Lansky system is the Sapphire stone. That really puts a mirror polish on the blade.

Is there a hone that has a higher grit than the ultra fine or can I go straight from it to the stropping hone?

I really don't know if Lansky sells a higher grit stone than the 1000 grit you are asking about. I go from the 1000 grit ultra fine straight to the strop and am very pleased. Perfect probably not but for the poor guy I get a nice mirror edge and sharp edge that is quite nice for the price.

Does anybody know the grit on this stone?

I know it says 1000 but this is actually a finishing hone, it won't necesarilly make your knife any sharper. It will put a mirror polish on your blade (if you know what ur doing). I love it, this is probably the cheapest high quality finishing hone I've ever used. Try it, you won't be sorry.

An essential part of the Lansky sharpening system

The basic version of the Lansky sharpening system only includes a "fine" hone (600 grit). This is adequate for a working kitchen-knife edge but generally won't produce a really hair-popping sharp edge. For that you need this hone (1000 grit) - and possibly an even finer one and/or a leather strop, but I haven't taken things that far yet.

Invento genial poero con mala calidad

La idea de Lansky resulta genial para afilar BIEN los cuchillos. Pero el producto está hecho en China y no controlan bien la calidad. El resultado es que muchas piedras no son planas y hay que rectificarlas, lo que representa comprar placas planas de diamente y frotar un tiempo hasta conseguir que sean planas. Se pueden conseguir piedras iguales, con la misma mala calidad, pero por mucho menos dinero
