A great model of a great old ship
This historic model arrived with the stern lifeboat in pieces and the port side davit holding it pulled loose from the railing. I suspect the damage happened when FedEx dropped it on the sidewalk outside my front door. The ship comes inside a wood framework that, along with some strategically placed pieces of styrofoam, should provide adequate protection.My first thought was to contact Handcrafted Model Ships directly. I went to their website and used the "contact us" option. Nothing happened so I called their 800 number and received no response to a voice mail. Then I did what I should have done all along and clicked on Amazon's "leave seller feedback" feature.HMS asked for some photographs of the damage. That request was in an EMail that made it amazingly easy to attach the photos and provide a description of each. They quickly agreed to provide a replacement lifeboat. Due to them being busy with Christmas caused a delay in sending it that made me a little unhappy. When it was finally on its way FedEx struck again. I'm not sure if I got the one that was lost or another one but HMS quickly followed up and made sure I was taken care of. They even made a nice credit to my credit card to apologize.The ship arrives with the bottom spar of the aft most mast needing to be put in place. Otherwise it would stick out too far and likely be damaged during shipping. A line that runs from the starboard side davit that the lifeboat hangs from to the end of that spar was routed incorrectly making it impossible to put the spar in place. Once I figured out where that line belonged the rest was pretty straightforward. HMS would have put me in phone contact with one of their techs had I needed help.The new lifeboat arrived hanging from new port and starboard side davits. I was then faced with how to make the installation. To install what they sent in one piece would have meant removing the second davit and dealing with a number of lines that went to and from various places. I chose to put the loose davit back in place and disconnect what was left of the busted lifeboat from the chains it hung from. It was not hard to disconnect the new lifeboat and hang it from the old chains.Yes, some of this review is really rating the seller and the shipper instead of the product but I feel strongly that this is an exception to that rule.I do not regret buying this model one bit. The details involved in the rigging and the guns alone are terrific.Update nearly three months after receiving the modelI paid so much attention to the damaged lifeboat that I never noticed a problem with the port side of the ship below the waterline. That is nobody's fault but mine. There are about 10 - 12 places where what must be a nail on the inside of the ship thatcauses a protrusion from the hull. They aren't very big but once you know they are there it really detracts from the appearance. The only solution for me is to display the starboard side instead of the port side. That means the two American flags are on the wrong side.Two pieces of advice - carefully survey the ENTIRE ship when it arrives - save the wood framework that it comes in.

Fantastic Model
The model is double superb. Best detail I have ever seen in a ship model in this price range, and I have about 20. Also, I have been on the actual Constitution several times, and this is very accurate in it's detail. I would call it museum quality. Also very well packaged. Big THANKS to Handcrafted Model Ships. CAME WITHOUT MARBLE BASE
This ship came with a wooden base, the usual Amazon reply of "we never said it came with a marble base", yet the pictures that they supply do show it wth the marble base. Suprise! EVERYONE that has a smart phone has the ability to take a "AS NOW SUPPLY WITH" picture to replace the existing pictures, BTW the instructions clearly describe this unit with a MARBLE base!
