Zoom slide scratches body and glass
Poor design or defective? Sliding the zoom/focus in and out I can feel and hear it scraping, leaving scratches that are clearly visible on the black metal body as well as the glass that covers the COB. Very disappointing. If it weren't for this issue it would be a nice flashlight. The magnet is strong. I'm debating returning it.UPDATE: I received an unsolicited letter and a replacement flashlight (and even extra batteries) from GearLight in response to my review. I'm impressed with the outstanding customer service I have received and am changing my rating accordingly. The replacement flashlight is better and does not exhibit the same issue. It still sounds a little grindy, but it doesn't result in the horrible scratching that I observed with the first unit. I would buy again with confidence knowing that GearLight stands behind their products. A sincere thanks to GearLight for going above and beyond!

This multi-function light may render other tactical lights obsolete.
I’m giving this light three stars because I haven’t used it in a working environment yet. These are my observations thus far: batteries that are included are an off brand and not Duracell which in the past has proven fatal when they leak and destroy the light. The red function of the COB light is good for night vision but does not include a flashing mode for roadside emergencies. The COB light works well but isn’t as bright as other comparable lights that I have. The zoom function works well from flood to pencil thin spot. The slide function to expose the COB light is nice and smooth while the light itself casts a nice wide beam of light. The magnet on the end cap is strong and should prove valuable for hands free operation. It would be nice to have a pocket clip to complement the COB light. The longer battery compartment accommodates a 18650 cell. Overall a well engineered light that feels of quality construction, however time will tell if the always failure prone switch is as good as the rest of the light.

Good value for the money
I use it all the time as a detention deputy. Not quite as bright as the $80 to $100 flashlights some of my co-workers own, but it comes pretty darn close and certainly gets the job done. It's very well built and doesn't go through batteries at an insane rate like some lights do. I prefer using AA batteries, though it does include a plastic adapter for a rechargeable battery. I like the "lantern" feature and the strong magnet at the base. This feature has already come in handy when you have to work in a dark cell when the light or power is out. My only two criticisms are having to cycle the modes by clicking the same back button over and over again to get to the mode you want (pretty clunky and slow, and extra wear on the switch) and the lack of a strobe function. Other than that it's a terrific flashlight and great value for the money.

Versatile Flashlight - Lantern - Emergency Beacon
I bought this flashlight as my first cob light, allowing it to stand on either end and act as a lantern to light up an entire room. Besides white, the cob light on the side of this flashlight also shines a bright red, useful as an emergency beacon or a night vision preserving light. The magnetic end is quite powerful enough to stick it at any angle to an iron or steel surface. The zoom on the front gives a wide range and you can choose high or medium brightness for it. Unlike many other flashlights, you can directly turn it off without having to cycle through the four options. Note that after it has been turned off for a while off it defaults back to high mode. The brightness in lumens was not listed. Comparing it to several of my other flashlights I found the front beam only equivalent to about 100 lumens, quite sufficient for indoors, but not enough for seeing wild animals far enough in advance during my night walks. I was going to just rate it 4 stars for that reason, but decided I should first contact Gearlight to ask what the lumen output should be. They told me about 300 lumens. When I informed them that I was only getting about 100, they said they would send me a replacement, which came within a week. The replacement is about equivalent to my other 300 lumen flashlight. I only planned to use the flashlight with AAA batteries, but since I also own an 18650 only flashlight, I tried it's 2000 ma battery with the Gearlight. I see no increase in brightness with the 18650 battery, though longer battery life per charge is to be expected from what I read. I have other flashlights that can use either type of battery and see no difference in brightness with them either. Using alkaline or Eneloop AAA batteries I see identical brightness. As far a reading light with the cob, it's single brightness level is too much when fully open, but you can slide the body to cover as much of the cob you like to reduce the brightness. This is a very versatile light and I liked it very much even before receiving the replacement. You will enjoy it.

For the money!?
Great flashlight at a great price. Mine flickers sometimes though. Tried different batteries and tried different sizes and same thing.I did contact customer service who sent some replacement tail switches and that helped A LOT! THANKS!This is my GearLight. There are many like it, but this light is mine. My GearLight is my best friend. It is my light. I must master it as I must master my life. My Gearlight, without me, is blind. Wiithout my Gearlight, I am blind. Together we see as one. Between one, meet the sun, in the palm of my hand. That's the plan. no flicker with a good clicker. Love this light.- inspired by WHR USMC
