Awesome, great, great OVA series!!
This is a real good series, if you like Crest of the Stars, Heavy Metal L-Gaim, or any Leiji Matsumoto based series you will enjoy this. The animation is top notch the action is great the story is great, the characters are interesting. I wish the original Orguss was out on R1 dvd so I could see more of this world known as Orguss. It really got me thinking of Heavy Metal L-Gaim while I was watching this, it just has a similar feeling to it. Get this DVD it is actually a bargain at this price as it contains the entire 6 episode OVA.

Macross meets Escaflowne?
You wish! Seriously though, I went into this one with high hopes, and it left me feeling VERY disappointed. With the character designer of Macross and a universe that combines a girl with mystical powers, giant robots, and warring nations, you'd think it would be a recipe for a winner...First, the good points: The character designs and animation are indeed quite good, and the main characters are likable enough (though not so likable that I remember their names). The soundtrack isn't half bad, and the voice-acting is passable. Now the bad: The whole thing feel incredibly rushed, a lot of time is spent on characters who are repulsive (perverse, deranged, and just plain wacko), there is more robot action in the opening credits than in every episode except the first and the last, the plot revelations happen so fast at the end that they make the storyline borderline rediculous (I know this a sequel but COME ON!), there is little backhistory given on the characters that we DO like, the action scenes are more gruesome than awesome (all the people dying when a city gets nuked in particular left me ready to lose my lunch), and the plot, characters, and dialog just don't really draw you in.If you want to see the mythical and the scientific combined (and the giant robot as well!), I reccomend checking out Escaflowne. If you love the character designs of Macross, you might want to consider Gunbuster. But I would only reccomend RENTING this one if you liked the first Orguss. No better than mediocre.

this show may pale to comparison to todays HD offerings.. but the script and characters were way ahead of its time.. brilliant anime..

So much promise, so little delivered
As a fan of the original Orguss (which is now available on R1 DVD), I bought the video tapes of this series with high hopes of seeing a resolution of the original.Instead, this series was an almost-unconnected story to the original, and even then the few ties between this and the original Orguss involve IGNORING the events of the original's last few episodes (and the flash-forward to the results of the last acts of the heroes), in favor of an EXTREMELY contrived alternate ending, altering the fates of several of the characters. Granted, it was nice seeing that one character again, but he was one of the few characters we were pretty sure DIDN'T survive long enough to have his fate changed by the reset. And, the last episode of ORGUSS 02 appeared to be a completely unrelated fragment of someone else's story that was too bland and generic to sell otherwise. The DVD sellers are delusional in their pricing. I came here looking for a bargain bin DVD to replace old VHS, more from completeness than anything else. But, $6 plus shipping would be pushing the value of the poorly written (but beautifully animated) direct-to-video series. $60+ is lunacy.

Great show, a real sleeper, good story, it stands on its own
First, this is a total departure from Orguss (1), and I'm not sure why they called it Orguss 2 other than an attempt to get fans from the first series, and it has strained connection to the first Orguss, which I won't spoil anything. This stands on its own and there is no reason to watch Orguss 1 before this. This is "all story," with next to zero fan service, very little goofy or cute stuff, no fluffy or superfluous items like songs or pop/idol stars. It is well directed, edited, and the characters and voice acting are good. The pacing is great and fast, they don't dwell on anything, there are no boring, odd side stories. The base story is great and kind of an unexpected, cool idea: ages ago, some strange cataclysm buried thousands of powerful robots in the earth, and now, various nations are in a races to find these, dig them up, activate them find pilots, and get them into the expected coming giant robot war.It has elements of (unexpected) political intrigue and deception, spies, loyalty, some funny scenes (a spy in a country pretending to be a lingerie salesman), a sort of dumb kid sucked in to the story, with quite a number of good plot twists and turns. Where the story starts is sure not where it ends. This is different in a good way vs most Anime. It is slightly dated, but also still refreshing to see a very focused, in depth story like this, which are rare in Anime. I'd compare it to Scrapped Princess, Broken Blade, El Hazard, maybe Big-O and Alda Noah.I wish there were more Anime like this, with political intrigue and intense stories.
