Works well
I've used this for a week now and it has a steady connection to my DSL provider - necessary because my previous modem/router was failing intermittently. Excellent performance for the price. Runs cooler than my old modem. The printed installation manual is entirely Windows oriented, and the 'Installation Wizard' included was on a mini-CD (which is useless on a slot-loading drive.) Fortunately, connecting the modem to my Mac and Time Machine was really straightforward.I was immediately connected to the internet, but was unable to reach the modem's internal web page to set up security. A call to tech support was in order. Tech support for Macs is the weak point and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5.Tech support, not surprisingly, expected me to be using Windows, but switched to the script for Mac support. It consisted, mostly, of rebooting the modem, rebooting the modem while holding down the reset button, etc. Nothing worked. Frustrated, I went to System Preferences and looked at Network and found a solution. If you need to get to the modem's internal web setup page and you're using a Macintosh, here's what worked for me:I'll assume you've got it connected and can reach the internet (which it does straight out of the box.)• Open a new page in your web browser and enter the IP address of the modem's internal web page, 192.168.1.1 (the browser will be unable to connect. That's OK.)• Open Network in System Preferences• On the first page, Click on the 'Advanced...' button• On the next page, click on the 'Renew DHCP Lease' button and then click 'OK'• When you get back to the first page, click 'Apply'• The modem's web page should then show in your browser, and at that point you'll lose the internet (you'll get it back, when you finish with the set-up.)• The web page has the set-up wizard and you can continue from there without a problem.• The wizard will want you to enter the VP and VC numbers, which you get from your DSL provider. Once I entered those numbers and save the settings I had full internet connectivity.Don't use a modem without setting up security! Take the time to make your web experience safer. The TP Link is a great bargain.

Great as a Modem with another Router
With AT&T DSL Service at 6 MB using PPoE Connection, the Router part of the TD-8840T did not work in the PPoE mode. So, the TP-Link TD-8840T was switched to Bridge Mode and connected to a Netgear Wireless Router that provided the Username/Password for the PPoE Connection. If the Router part of TP-LINK TD-8840T is bypassed using the Bridge Mode, it works great as a Modem. The Modem part of TP-Link TD-8840T is rock solid but the mystery of the Router part of TP-Link TD-8840T not working in the PPoE mode still remains, though only as a mere curosity!

Great inexpensive ADSL modem
I've bought 5 of these over the last 6 months or so, so obviously I think they're pretty good. The web based user interface (UI) is very quick with the settings well organized and the modem seems to sync up with the local DSL provider (Centurylink) quickly as well. The little leaflet that passes for instructions clearly showed the default IP address and password so you can just point your browser at the modem and get started. As such, I didn't bother with the CD that comes in the box and can't say if it's any good or not. Connection speeds seem about the same as other brands/models I've used although generally this comes down to the quality of your lines rather than your modem. You will need certain settings from your ISP, especially the VPI/VCI and the connection type (ppoe or ppoa) as well as your user name and password. If you don't know these things and can't figure out how to get them from your ISP you should probably just rent a modem from them rather than trying to configure your own.Cons: The paper documentation that comes with the modem is pretty minimalistic and there isn't much in the way of help in the UI for the different options etc. Also the phone cords that come in the box appear pretty cheap but at least the included splitter/filter is a good one.BTW, the 8840t I bought in December 2013 was version 4.1.Bottom line is this is the best non-wireless dsl modem I've found to date and I'll keep buying them as long as TP-Link keeps making them.

Setup with AT&T is difficult, but it can be done. Setup CD won't work, manual setup is best.
The setup CD will not work if you have AT&T. It asks for the ISP username and pass word, but fails to complete the setup after the correct info is entered. The night time tech support for TP-Link is a generic tech support service that can only re-read the owner's manual to you and knows very little about the product. The best way I found to finally get this thing set up is to use the manual set up method described in the owner's manual. You will need your VPI and VCI values from your ISP to complete the manual setup. Finally, DON'T expect prompt delivery from Amazon. I ordered this thing on November 21st and it showed up on December 4th.

A good cheap modem/router for at&t
I had some crappy at&t modems and they all had a ton of crc errors causing my net to disconnect and run slow and the modem wouldn't restart properly. In 7 hours on a at&t modem i would have 10k-20k crc errors. this modem only gave me 29. yes 29 errors. that's due to the crappy at&t service lines i have around here. For 30 bucks. It easy to setup . i only been using it 7 hours and already love it more than the modems at&t supply's. so yes i would say buy it if you have at&t. works way better and cheaper than their modems. im using at&t elite dsl. I have no clue if it works with u-verse. It may. Just have to ask the company that makes it. they even have a website so it isn't a no name brand.
