Field Guide to French Cheeses
French Cheeses: The Visual Guide to More Than 350 Cheeses from Every Region of France by Kazuko Masui and Tomoko Yamada is a guide to over 350 cheeses in France organized by region. This is might be very useful to the tourist, but makes it less helpful for someone going to a cheese counter and trying to decide which cheese to try. Each cheese is accompanied by a photo, a short description of where and how the cheese is made. Each cheese also has a short "essential facts" section that describes its weight and dimensions, percent of milk fat, best time to eat, length of aging, and the kind of milk used (cow, ewe, or goat - and raw or pasteurized). Sometimes short "tasting notes" are given as well so you have some idea of how it tastes or smells. The photos, by Yohei Maruyama, are one of the best parts of the book.

Excellent Reference Guide
This book is excellent for selecting cheeses, and extremely handy when in France and looking over the vast cheese selections at the markets. Cheeses are easily arranged alphabetically, and you'll even find helpful wine pairing tips for each cheese.Well worth the modest cost of this book, and great fun just to peruse and discover the vast array of French cheeses.

delectable and drool-worthy
I ordered this book after devouring "The Whole Fromage" by Kathe Lison. She told the story of buying the "Dorling Kindersley French Cheeses" guide in Charles de Gaulle Airport on Christmas Eve in Paris, and having to resist pressing her nose to the pages to smell the cheeses, for the pictures were that vivid. To this day, it remains one of her favorite books about cheese - and now, it's one of mine. I too, delighted in the 350 glorious French cheeses pictured in this book, and was able at last to see fromage that before, I'd only imagined. Now I have some idea of what I've been missing, what to look for in the cheese aisle, and what to do if I ever make it to France - seek out cheese!

Ok book
Purchased to learn more about cheese before a trip to Paris. Was interesting and the pictures were fun to look at. Helped me have a better understanding of what I ordered when I got to Paris.

GREAT resource for info about French Cheeses
Since I am not French or a cheese maker, I have no idea how accurate the info is or how in depth it is, but it suits my needs as a cheese lover in the US, just fine. I have the cheese encyclopedia which covers certain cheeses, but does not give as much info or specific to French cheeses (as there are SOOOO many cheeses to cover in the world). So this was a nice addition to my reference library that is more specific.

Fromage for the non-Francophile
I bought this book for my husband for Valentine's Day since we live in France and have become obsessed by the different types of cheeses we have discovered in regions outside of where we live normally. Though this book is hard to find in English, it's originally written in French and is a super book to own as a reference for many reasons - especially the well done photos. A must own for the French cheese lover....especially those living in or traveling to France.

Not very useful
This book covers lots of different regional cheeses, almost none of which are available in the States. As this book only covers a small subset of all the different cheeses produced in France, if you're in Paris, it probably won't be much help there either.

Comprehensive guide
This is the same book as French Cheese, in case you were wondering, with a few very small differences. The "legend" for classifying is different and the price of the book is different. It's an excellent reference guide.

Excellent.
Last month my language school near Nice gave a two hour presentation on French Cheeses. The reference book they recommended was the French version of this one 'Encylopedie des Fromages'. In French it costs around 25 Euros. In English it's out of print - but a second hand copy on Amazon costs peanuts (March 2012 prices).I've bought two of these, one for a friend and one for myself. Both copies were in perfectly good condition. And if you want to know about French cheeses, this is the book to get.

What You Need to Know about French Cheese
I like the size and layout: it's easy to read and easy to use for reference. I've since visited two of the places mentioned and have ambitions to visit more. The authors provide enough facts and detail without going too far. A great read and really valuable.

LIGHTWEIGHT HANDY GUIDE
We've owned this book in the past and it got lost in a move. Now that we are living in France full-time, we find it an essential quick reference. It's by no means exhaustive but it is comprehensive enough for day-to-day shopping and discussion of French cheeses, an almost essential small, lightweight handy guide.

Excellent book, describing hundreds of french cheeses
Excellent book, describing hundreds of french cheeses.Only point: I bought it used with the description: Condition: Used - VeryGood. However the book has visible discoloration due to sunlight - I would not describe that as "VeryGood".
