Q: the color on here looks more of a grey is it grey or a brown?

This is a brown shade not grey. Not sure why the picture looks so grey? The blanket pictured on the cover of yarn is made in this shade and is more accurate

Q: Have any of you found knots in these big balls of yarn. If so, what did you do about them?

I "always" roll my yarn into balls first. I never start any crochet project without making sure that there is no problem with my yarn. Learned the hard way with too many other projects. But honestly this yarn is much easier to work with because of it's weight. Happy Crocheting or knitting!

Q: Would Sand or Taupe work as a skin tone? If yes, which one lighter?

If you want it to be lighter tone then I would suggest the color sand. The taupe looks a tad darker than milk chocolate(candy bar) shade. Of that makes any sense.
