Do I have to have the color ink cartridge for black and white prints?

When the color ink cartridge runs out it still prints but will not print color content. When the color cartridge is out, the printer will not work.

Which one can work on this printer? HP61 or HP61XL?

I use HP61. I am not familiar with the HP61Xl.

What is the scanning ability? I'm looking for really good color duplication.
