I cannot return the item as America has blocked the transportation for the last month
I have a few of these machines and they have never failed to let me down I purchased one when the first came out, I store all my movies and work files on them I have now 11 devices one of them must by a little over 10 years old operating day and night and is still going. It’s a shame they stopped the drobo mini, I sent I picture to them of a similar design to that before they brought it out unfortunately it would only take the slim 2.5‘’ hard drives. I carry these things everywhere all over the world and they work perforce on Mac and pc. And I’ve tried all different types on the market nothing beats drobo

great Idea, terrible customer service
Update: 6months later Drivesafers , a company that specializes in drive rescue, GAVE UP on my drobo Restauration! They could not recover a single file!Stay away from drobo’s people!m along time drobo users. I had a second gen, I had a Drobo 5D and then dared to upgrade to the new 8D. After migration of my drive set it worked fine for a week. Same speed (disappointing) but ok. then its got all read and refused to see ANY drives. I opened a support case. and from then it went bad..its been 45 DAYS now that their customer support is working on this. They never reach out, I have to follow up every 2-3 days. Its now with developers to create a custom firmware. Im beyond frustrated at this point. All my data is in jeopardy , this 1200$ brick is sitting here with no silver lining yet. Drobo refuses to pay for data recovery.Drobo are great when they work. But never trust it with your ONLY backup eve though they sell it as if its bulletproof. google around lots of professional photographers writing similar posts sadly.

Great device for photography and other creative editing.
Video, photo and audio editing. I filled it with 8 10TB Seagate Barracuda Pro hard drives and set it to use dual disk failure mode and still be able to operate. It has functioned very well to this point. I also outfitted it with a 512GB 860 SSD in the SSD slot. My only issue with functionality is it will occasionally pause, like it is buffering even when using simple SD recorded video. That is irritating. Tech support is frustrating to reach. Great to work with but it is like trying to reach a member of congress. In summary, I love this thing and hope to solve my one small buffering issue soon.

So far, so good
I have four 10TB drives and four 2TB drives in my new Drobo 8D. Connected to my Mac Mini via Thunderbolt 3. I have dual drive failure protection turned on and an old samsung 850 SSD stuck in the back.I can report no issues so far after about three weeks. Feels stable, professional, dependable. the Dashboard is so easy to use. all hard drives immediately provisioned and recognized. hot swapping works having tried it twice. all data remained accessible while the array rebuild.sharing screenshot of speed test. Plenty fast for my needs even with dual-drive failure protection turned on.If this proves dependable over time this will be a fantastic device. Happy so far.

Warning when migrating from other Drobos
I got this to migrate from a smaller 5D3 Drobo. However when you do this the total drive space is limited to 64 TB because that is the limit on the on 5D3. This is not stated anywhere in the migration documentation and kind of defeats the benefit of migrating. Also Drobo support was not at all responsive in fixing this issue. I had to transfer the data back and forth which also mean buying new drives. Big waste of time.

Hardware failure within the first few hours of use. Replacement has been working perfectly.
Once initial set up was completed successfully and the Drobo dashboard installed on my Mac Mini, I proceed to migrate all my data from my DAS and NAS. After a few hours of data transfer, I noticed an amber light from one of my drives and all transfers had ceased. Dashboard couldn't detect my Drobo at this point. After shutting the Drobo off, the unit would not boot up again. None of the front LED lights turned on. Hard drives were not recognized nor detected.Sent for a replacement. I hope this was just a one off issue as I hope to use this as a DAS disk array for my file server.(reviewed 1 star rating)Update on replacement unit (Jan 14, 2019)So far it has been working fine for the past 3 days and through several power interruptions. Changed my rating to 4 stars. Will return in half a year to update this review.

My second Drobo 8D still didn't work
I really like Drobo. I had 2 Drobo 5Ds for many years and when one of them finally died I decided to upgrade to a bigger Drobo. First one crashed my computer constantly whenever I tried to copy files onto or from it. Returned it and got another. Worked for a few weeks and then all my drives started failing. So I thought ok some of those drive are older. Until the newer drives started failing too and I purchased 4 different new drives and all say failed as soon as they are put into the drobo. Now I can't access all my files and likely lost a bunch of important stuff. So now I'm going to try out a Synology product and hope it works better then the 8D.

So far, so good.
This is the best RAID DAS that I have used so far. I love that the drives slide into the enclosure without having to screw rails onto them. Additionally, the software is easy to use and keeps an eye on the health of the disks. Lastly, the packaging was on point. Comes super well packed with a nice presentation, if you care about that.
