Holman Old Testament Commentary - Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther

This commentary, and all that I have used in this series, are really structured around pre-prepared sermons or lessons from the text. This makes it an excellent resource for a small-group or Sunday School teacher or a leader who wants to teach the prepared lesson. They would also be useful for personal devotions.However, for a pastor or Bible student, it is of more limited use. Often the lessons go in a different direction than I am taking or don't speak to a specific question that I have on the text. Sometimes the lesson takes a much larger chunk of scripture for its text, making the commentary much more general and likely to skip over details I want to understand. However, where it has been useful is in illustrations and quotes, giving me that different direction for taking a message, and the ability to get a quick overview of the passage. It has very useful summaries and outlines for each lesson.

I have been recommending Holman for over five years now, the whole product line really. They publish great study tools for the the Bible student-,churchgoer, whether it be the Illustrated Bible dictionary, the Bible Handbook, the Old and New Testament Commentary volumes. This volume of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther is no different. You will get a great background of the history, the people, and an understanding of what the author meant, who penned these the Bible books. Anders will then give you just how you take that understanding, and apply it in your life today. Moreover, one of my favorite aspects of these volumes is the Deeper Discoveries sections at the end of most Bible chapters, where Anders and other authors from other volumes, gives you deeper understanding of certain verses from the chapter under discussion.

A wonderful series, and a great commentary in that series. I recently taught through these three books and found this to be a valued reference in my studies and preparation. The author strikes a good balance between scholarship, application, and devotion. The book is divided into sections to make reference easier. Even the type on the pages is good and easy to read. Highly recommended!

This is a great commentary. It provides principles and applications which are very helpful. I have used other Holman Commentaries and find them to be very helpful.This one did not dissapoint me. It is great.

I have really enjoyed it. It has really added th my Scripture knowledge. I plan to buy additional books for other Books of the Bible.

I enjoy the Holman commentaries. What they say is valuable, but I wish they had a bit more content. It's a bit too basic. Makes a good starter commentary for those who are beginning to dig deeper.

This an excellent study on Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther.The Holman OT Commentary is one of the best, well developed and written.An excellent choice for your library.
