FLPUK-2 LP-Style Electric Ukulele with Gig Bag, Quilt Maple

Because I can't pass up a good deal (and get too "Amazon happy" late at night), my concert mahogany Kala now has a new friend after 7 lonely years. I was a little worried about the quality when ordering, but I must say I am SUPER impressed. What a beautiful and solid feeling instrument that sounds amazing! The neck is sturdy as can be and the body is impressively smooth and unblemished. Back when I was still attempting to learn guitar (eventually gave up when I discovered ukulele), even my more expensive electric guitars didn't have finishes quite as nice as this. My only real complaints are with the strings and tuning pegs. The strings aren't fantastic and will leave some black residue on your fingers. However, this wasn't a big deal though as I had already planned on swapping them out anyways as other reviewers suggested. I had her restrung with a low G using nickel electric guitar strings at the local shop as I am not experienced with this and didn't want to risk putting too much tension on the neck. He measured the gauge of the original strings and they were exactly what another reviewer mentioned (.10, .16, .16, .10). I highly recommend having a professional do it if you aren't experienced as there is definitely an art to it and is much more than simply throwing on new strings. It only cost me $20 (strings included) and he showed me the process should I ever want to replace the strings myself. We ultimately decided on .22 (unwound), .16, .16, .10 for this setup and it sounds/feels ten million times better. It also alleviated a great deal of string rattle I experienced with the original strings, though not completely. This, too, isn't a huge deal and is barely noticeable when hooked up to an amp. Furthermore, the uke came with a hex key to (I assume) adjust the level of the pickups, but I haven't attempted this yet and don't think it is really necessary for my needs. Speaking of the pickups, they are magnetic and will not work with nylon ukulele strings, so if you replace them, stick to nickel, steel, etc. Onto the tuning pegs, they are not terrible by any means, but they could be a bit better. While it was more of an issue with the original strings, it is easy quickly "skip over" when tuning the uke. This seemed most noticeable on the G string (tee-hee...sorry, couldn't resist) for whatever reason. The strings are still new (just a day old) and undergoing the expected stretching, requiring minor adjustments after extended play. With that in mind, the uke seems to hold its tune quite well! Oh, and one other thing I forgot to mention: I am not sure if it is a build issue or a problem unique to the one I received, but the tone knob is a little wonky. It seems tighter to the body than the volume knob and hums a bit when turned up. The tight feel was easily remedied by (gently!) pulling the knob off and re-seating it, but the hum is still there. It doesn't bother me too much and I am sure it is a simple wiring issue that can be addressed if it ever becomes irritating.Now for the fun! As aforementioned, I always wanted to learn guitar, but my lack of patience and freakishly small fingers made that dream fizzle out quickly. Despite falling madly in love with ukulele shortly after, I admittedly was jealous of the sound guitar players could achieve and the wonderful effects pedals they had access to. I truly love the natural sound of a ukulele and think it adds a charming element to almost any song, but there are some songs that never sounded quite right my acoustic ukulele (reentrant tuning). I've played on several acoustic/electric ukes, but they always sounded too similar to what I was used to and longed for something that sounded more like an electric guitar for the days I wanted that. This is definitely the uke for those occasions! I hooked her up to a Zoom Gn multi-effects pedal (cheap, but surprisingly nice!) and discovered an incredibly fun new world, full of all the possibilities I have always wanted! I am a huge fan of that "surf" sound and, after fiddling around with some settings, I came REALLY close to the sound I always drooled over. I spent all last night playing everything from the Ventures and Raveonettes to The Lively Ones and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Switching from reverb to more delay, I could even achieve "The Edge" sound and play some iconic U2 riffs. What incredible fun that I never thought I would be able to do on a uke!I am having a bit of a love affair with my new toy and I don't see it ending any time soon. Seriously, for the price point, this thing is a steal! Endless fun for newbies and pros alike!

Total and absolute blast.It's essentially a miniature electric-guitar. I'm capable of playing any guitar-riffs that use the bottom-4 strings of a guitar and its awesome. I would have given it 5-stars, had not been for a few things.It did come with quite a lot of buzzing, however I was planning on replacing the strings with low-G anyways, which I did, and had to do some bridge-work to minimize the buzzing as much as I could. On the stock-strings, you'll also need to do some bridge-work to lower the amount of buzz.Also, the bag. The bag it came was is total and absolute trash. It's paper-thin and mine came ripped and scuffed on the inside in all sorts of places. Doesn't matter to much for me, cause I'm planning on getting a hard-case for it, but it really is a shame on how low the bag-quality it compared to how absolutely amazing the ukulele itself is.The knobs and everything work great.The A-string is SLIGHTLY more quiet than the other strings, which seems to be a trend among some of the other lower reviews here, however you can still hear the string fine for my uke, but you can tell it is somewhat quiet.In all, just a really solid ukulele. If you plan on getting it, I'd suggest just getting "Ernie Ball Super Slinky Nickel Wound Set.009 - .042" and putting the bottom 4 strings on for a low-g tuning, and getting a new case for the uke. Getting both of those will run you up another $25 - $30, but for the price of this ukulele just being just $120, that extra $25 - $30 tacked onto the $120 is still absolute deal when you account the quality of the ukulele itself.

I am astounded by the quality of this ukulele. It arrived with almost no setup problems at all. Intonation, checked with a tuner, seems to be perfect. Each string was on pitch on twelfth fret. No adjustment required. Regarding comments about a buzz on one of the strings, there is a slight buzz on the E string. I believe that raising the string's height will take care of this. The neck is perfectly straight, I could discern no bow in the neck.I noticed that some people have complained about the "noisy" pickups. They are single coil pickups. I couldn't tell that they were any noisier than any other inexpensive single coil pickups. Tone of the pickups sounded fine to me.Addendum regarding strings:I have measured the strings that came with this uke with a micrometer. The gauges are as follows:G: .010C: .016E: .016A: .010I have seen some D'addario sets out there that are .011, .011, .016, .009. I have compared these gauges against string gauges that are on my mandolin, guitars, and tenor banjo. I think the D'addario sets might work, but until I try them, The lighter gauge might require some adjustment to the neck. I would certainly be leery of re-stringing this with a heavier gauge strings than came on it. E.g., some electric ukes out there come with a wound .o26 for the C string. Choose wisely.Keep in mind that this will sound more like a miniature electric guitar than a ukulele. Still, the re-entrant ukulele tuning will make for some interesting and different voicings for your band or praise team.

much fun for what I paid. Get a cheap practice amp (donner makes a nice one) or something like an iRig. If you want to go overboard, consider something like a Zoom G1 Four too. Super fun.I wish they offered the option for low G tuning on the website, but electric guitar strings work fine.
