ahoy ship mates!!!
This is 1 of,if not the best pirate movie i have ever had the pleasure to sit through. For those that dont already know Blackbeard was a real person and pirate who lived back in the 1700, I have been studying up on the real blackbeard for a couple of years now and was please that this movie is as historically accurate as it could be based on the information that i have read. Also there seems to have been alot of effort put into the design of the sets, props and costumes which to me all had a realistic feel for the time in which the film is set. Also all of the acting is solid all of the way through!. James purefoy shines perfectly in the title role of Edward Teach/Blackbeard. Mr Purefoy seems to have embodied Blackbeard inside and out based on what i have read on the man himself and what has been recorded throughout history,he made me feel as if i was watching the real life Blackbeard on screen and not just someone acting him out!. In my opinion Mr Purefoy did an excellent job of bringing this legendary and infamous man to life!. If you are a fan of pirates, Mr Purefoy or just old Mr Blackbeard himself then this is defintely 1 for you!.

Difficult to recommend.
Disappointed in this docu-drama. For a start, way too long at 118mins. As a result, repetitive in showing the brutal pirates capturing ships time after time with little variation each time. I found I was too often distracted from what promised to be an interesting docu from a fascinating time in the joint history of USA & UK. The Governors of the then colonies of Carolina & Virginia were shown to be almost comical figures (& am almost sure they wouldn't be). Captains of boarded ships also came across as consistently incompetent, overawed by the terrifying Blackbeard. Needless to say, have watched once, but not again.

Great Fun!
This DVD is great fun and seems to be 'fairly' accurate historically. James Purefoy makes an excellent Blackbeard and delivers a great performance. The action scenes are convincing and, if some of the scenes involving regional governors on land are a little weak, the rest of the film is good enough to withstand it. There are one or two examples over overacting or foolish dialogue but this is a film about piracy, a subject which invites exaggeration. Over all its great fun if not taken too seriously.

Accurate, informative and highly entertaining ...aaaarrrrgggghhhh!'
I thoroughly enjoyed this. You could describe it as part historical drama, part documentary. Israel Hands (Blackbeard's second in command) acts as the narrator of this tale. Based on my readings of material written about Blackbeard and the 'golden age of piracy', this is an accurate portrayal. As you'd expect from the BBC, the dramatic historical reenactments are very well done. A great dvd for anyone who would like to learn about Edward Teach (alias 'Blackbeard'), would like to get some insight into the actual look and activities of early 18th century pirate ships (or should I say 'sloops'?) and pirates, or would simply like to be entertained. James Purefoy does a great job of playing the eponymous antihero. ...nobody says 'aaarrrrgggghhhh!' though ...not even once.

OH DEAR ...
These are sad days indeed. Having been brought up on 'Sir Fracis Drake' et al. I give one star and that is because James Purefoy is in it. Isreal Hans and all the rest of 'em are as soft as mud with the usual BBC 'incestuous'casting. Sad ..sign of the times.
