Flexible, neutral, well built solution if you need a desktop DAC/amp combo
I’ve spent a few days now with my Topping D3, and I’m overall very pleased with its performance, especially at the price. I’m running them connected by a TOSLINK optical cable from the digital output of an Apple Airport Express, so I have Airplay access to my lossless iTunes library. The headphones are Sony MDR-V6. So, I am reviewing this as a DAC and headphone amp combination. The volume control is smooth and steady, and channel balance seems fine. The input selector push button cycles through the options, and are solid and work without any problems. The unit seems very well constructed from extruded aluminum, mine with an attractive silver faceplate. The volume control is surrounded by a blue LED ring, which is not blinding. The unit has some weight to it, which objectively keeps it well in place if your cables move around, and subjectively make me feel good about the quality of parts.I was originally running the headphones directly from the analog output of the Airport Express, not ideal but it sounded good. Compared to that, the sound of the D3 is extremely detailed, and I hear everything on the recording, from the sublime to the unfortunate. The impression is that the D3 is clean, with very little distortion. At first I thought the sound might have been a little lean and light on bass and lower midrange, but I’ve concluded that’s not the case. You hear what’s on the recording; if the recording is full and well recorded, that’s what you’ll hear. The Sony’s are known to have a little high frequency lift anyway. If you’re looking for added tube “warmth” or bass enhancement, you’d better look elsewhere. To my ears, these output exactly what they’re fed.I haven’t discovered any downsides yet. It’s exactly what I was looking for: a neutral, flexible, well constructed DAC/amp combo with a nice rotary volume control. I’m thoroughly enjoying my purchase.

Great Solid-State DAC/Amp
Headphones: AKG K702 - 62ohmSource: foobar2000 playing FLACI recently made a switch from the HiFiMAN EF-2A vacuum tube amplifier to this to drive my AKG K702 headphones and I am very pleased.I wanted to move away from the tube sound and I must say, this has given me a good impresion of solid-state amps. It is a great DAC as well.I have been using this almost everyday for about 2 months now and I am enjoying it. It really emphasizes the sound and I can listen to my music more analytically while still enjoying the music itself for entertainment purposes. Although it definitely does not help dampen the harsh treble of the K702s, like a tube amplifier would. The versatility is also great, as it has multiple different outputs and inputs, including the very convenient USB DAC input, which I love. I have yet to experiment with the other inputs though, as I do not have a computer that can support them. The amp also has an RCA output which is very useful.Overall, I am not a true audiophile and I have only been in the hobby a little less than a year, but I can tell good audio equipment when I see it, and this is definitely up there.(may edit in impression after 6 months)

Good if you can get it to turn on..
Good build quality. Really good sounding DAC via line out. Not quite as good using the built in headphone amp. My problem with this device was that it took at least 2 presses of the power button to turn it back on after being turned off once. I counted 8 times on one occasion. The power LED ring around the volume knob would just flash and turn back off each time until it finally turned on.I returned one unit and ordered another, only for it to basically do the same thing, except this one would turn on fully, but shut back off. A second or third press of the power button would eventually turn it on properly.Once the thing turns on it works pretty well, but not worth the $100+

Eh not a preamp it's just a dac don't be fooled by the descripstion
Headphone amp portion is very Bass heavy and boomy with little bass definition and a lot of boom. This will not work as a preamp for an outboard amplifier the volume control only controls the headphone output so don't let the description fool you when irlt says it can be used as a preamp.I would buy a passive preamp to go with it but the dac sounds no better than my fiio headphone dac/amp using a 3.5mm to rca cable so I'll be returning it.You get what you pay for and I was hoping the volume control would control the outputs Jack's as the description suggests but it doesn't.

Pretty amazing sound quality and power
The amp is actually quite powerful, more so than I initially thought it would be. The dac is great, sound is super clean and detailed without a hint of grain. Build quality is awesome... There is absolutely nothing I can complain about for the price. Only thing to keep in mind is that it's not exactly small, not really a negative but it is like 3 to 4x the size of an e10k

Returned because it started dying immediately
Displaying erratic problems from day one. Randomly turning off and playing static through the headphones. Stay away. I had to return a dead Topping DX3 pro as well. Love my Topping D30 DAC, but obviously Topping has some quality issues.

Me encanta
