Pleasantly Surprised With How Well This Works!
First I purchased this in the CD format, before signing up for Audible so I could have it on my phone too. I've spent a bit of time in Greece over the past few years and have made close to zero progress in the language. I could say a few basic words, but poorly. Within a couple days of listening to this program suddenly I understood more than I learned from months spent in Greece. No kidding. What works for me is the emphasis on each syllable, the repetition, and the fact that I'm both speaking it as we go along, and LISTENING to others speak it. That way when I hear it spoken I now understand it. One thing that hung me up with learning to speak Greek is that I can't tell where one word ends and another begins. Well, they run together, but Pimsleur breaks it down for me. I tend to repeat each lesson about three times before moving on. Maybe that's because I've been listening to them in my car while driving around, or maybe I'm just that slow. But I do eventually get it and move on. I love that the words and phrases learned in each thirty minute session are picked up and reiterated in the following lessons—over and over again.Since this is purely conversational, with no workbooks, I thought I'd have trouble. I consider myself more of a visual learner. This program makes me think perhaps I'm more of a hands-on learner, because I'm getting this. Can't wait for my upcoming trip to Greece to put what I've learned into action. The only criticism I can come up with is that occasionally I'll be unsure of a sound. You know, was that an "nnn" sound or a "mmm" sound. I tend to fake it and move along, and pick it up later. Although a few times I've googled the word to see it to know for certain. But I've only done that a handful of times. Likely it's because I tend to listen to my angry-screamo music on full blast most of the time. If you haven't blown your eardrums out, you might not have that problem. (Also, sometimes you can't tell the sound by looking at the written word in Greek either.)
