One City's Wilderness: Portland's Forest Park, 3rd edition Paperback – Folded Map, October 1, 2010

It is a good book on the history, topography, and geology of Forest Park. It also has an All Trail Challenge with a detailed map of each hike.

The maps are too small to read to be useful, but it is a fun story about the founding of Forest Park if you're interested in learning the history.

This is a rare guidebook among guidebooks. The author really knows and loves this park, and so the descriptions and details are excellent and enthusiastic without being at all gushy. The list of plants / flowers to be found in the park is a bonus not always found in guidebooks, which encourages visitors to discover and appreciate more of the plant-life and blooms throughout the park. It really covers the range of different trails and parts of the whole park very well. The directions and parking tips are especially helpful, particularly in an era when many authors / publishers are content to just let people use GPS / Google maps, which do not always help with fine details that you need to know to find trailheads and deal with parking issues. The guide also does a good job of alerting you to which hikes are likely to be more crowded or in developed areas, and which more secluded with more natural, untrammeled surroundings. Portland has a lot of good places to visit outside the city, so not everyone really explores Forest Park in the city. But, after digging into the book, it is really easy to want to explore this park more.

We went for a hike in Forest Park and my daughter and son-inlaw had this book, they said we could borrow it, but it was so good that as soon as we got home I went online and ordered my very own. If you like to hike in Portland then I recommend you get this book. I really like that it has nature identification sections also. Real photos.

We hike in Forest Park every weekend and this book has been an excellent resource. Highly recommend! It's definitely inspired us to try different trail heads and get more variety in our walks.
