Ammonites inspire the imagination in a very special way
The beauty of their regular spirals, their diversity as well as their unusual form which is almost completely unrivalled by any present-day equivalents, all fascinate the observer. Even prehistoric man collected them, and nowadays there is hardly a fossil collection in which they do not take pride of place......In this book only the 'neoammonoids' of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods are regarded as 'ammonites'. The other fossil members of the class Cephalopoda, the nautilids, goniatites, clymeniids, ceratites and belemnites, are discussed only as and when they are thought to contribute to a better understanding of the ammonites. The above is from the preface of the 1976 German publication, by the author (translated by Janine Lettau). Found this copy at the library book sale and thought it looked interesting, since I like fossils. This English edition was published in 1981, which includes improvements and new references for a total of 246 pages. Many B & W photos, drawings, and a few data tables. A total of nine chapters, references, and appendices of a brief guide to ammonite morphology; also author and subject index.
