I am curious what the Manufacturer's response is to some of the reviews that claim the device damaged their door frame.

The fact that the manufacturer hasn't responded to your questions is very telling. My guess is that some vehicles use thinner material in that area, and combined with a heavier person on the step, the surface will deform.

Why is this one so much more expensive than others?

It is absolutely waaaay too expensive for what it is. And yes years ago I too found a much cheaper alternative that WORKS! When price is inflated this much, it becomes a brand problem. So sad.

Are the screws that attach the rubber bumper to the step now on the back or on the bottom?

The rubber is attached by screws on the bottom. I don't know when or how they were different. I bought mine in May, 2020
