What I needed for my solar battery connections

I needed this to replace the battery lead on a 3ft gauge diesel locomotive. It was ideal for the job.

I am running a 3500W Inverter off my 12V battery bank and this could potentially pull over 300A at 12V so I wanted some cable that would handle this current with some to spare (you hear too many stories of under-size cables being overloaded, heating up and even catching fire !). I was impressed with the size of these cables which are rated around 480A and I bought a length in red and length in black. I managed to find the appropriate size crimp connectors and my existing anvil crimper works fine with the cable size and crimp connector size. The only problem I faced was how to cut such large cables. It was suggested I try a hacksaw which worked after a fashion on longer lengths but left the end of the copper core a bit raggetty which made it very difficult to get it into the crimp connector. On shorter length, I found that the saw would pull strands from the copper core as you sawed which was not at all desirable. In the end, I bit the bullet and ordered a Rancross Heavy Duty Ratchet Wire Cutter from Amazon and this slices through the cable like butter and when you cut back the insulation to reveal the copper core, all the strands are nice and straight and can be easily inserted into the crimp connector. I am very pleased with the cable which does all I wanted it to do.

Big heavy duty 70mm cable and very flexible. It powers my renogy 3000 watt inverter no problem. I cut this wire with bolt crops I purchased from wickes.
